“Religious Freedom: An Essential Pillar of a Just Society”
Pope Leo XIV reaffirms the Church's commitment to persecuted Christian communities and emphasizes religious freedom as the foundation of human coexistence
In an audience granted to representatives of Aid to the Church in Need on October 10, 2025, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that religious freedom is not a privilege granted by institutions, but an essential condition for the formation of just societies. This freedom enables individuals and communities to seek, live, and bear witness to the truth without fear of persecution.
The Pontiff recalled the growing hostility and violence against various religious communities, including Christianity, and reiterated the Church’s commitment to supporting Christian minorities in countries such as the Central African Republic, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, and Peru. In this regard, he cited Saint Paul’s words in the First Letter to the Corinthians: “If one member suffers, all suffer together with it.”

Religious freedom, affirmed Leo XIV, is more than a legal right; it is the pillar of authentic reconciliation. Its denial deprives human beings of the capacity to respond to the “call of truth” and leads to the disintegration of the ethical and spiritual bonds that sustain communities. “Trust gives way to fear, suspicion replaces dialogue, and oppression breeds violence,” the Pope warned, quoting his predecessor, Francis.
The Pope also emphasized that the defense of religious freedom must be lived, protected, and promoted in the daily lives of individuals and communities. The mission of Aid to the Church in Need is part of this framework, promoting forgiveness and reconciliation, and accompanying the Church wherever there is need, where she is threatened, or where she suffers.
Rebuilding a chapel, supporting a nun, providing a radio station or a vehicle are actions that “strengthen the life of the Church” and the “spiritual and moral” fabric of society. The assistance offered transforms the foundation’s members into true “peacemakers.”
The Pope concluded his speech by urging those present to “never tire of doing good,” because the fruits of their labor “are manifested in countless lives and give glory to our heavenly Father.”
