Whoever does not carry their cross and follow me is not worthy of me: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró

Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the  Gospel for Sunday, June 28, 2026,  entitled, “Whoever does not carry his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.”

What does it mean to be a Christian?

In catechism we learned that  being a Christian is following Jesus.

Yes, follow Jesus.  Not follow yourselfnor follow the lifestyle of the world : The Christian  is  in the world but  is not  of the world.

Faith is  not   a  theory  to be learned, but  life  to be received, embraced, and enjoyed. Being a Christian  is not legalistic moralism:  it is living a love story with the Lord . A story  that will culminate in heaven , where  no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him  (cf.  1 Cor  2:9).

And love demands and gives  everything . We cannot love God only when it suits us and when it suits us: it leads us to give everything.

In the Gospel,  the Lord invites us to put Him at the center , putting father, mother, and children aside…

Ultimately, it’s about recognizing that you are not the  teacher , but the  disciple ; that you are not the  master , but the  servantIt’s about recognizing that you are not God , that you don’t give life to yourself.  That you need to be saved .

And to take up the cross.  Sometimes we live aspiring to a discipleship without the cross, to a comfortable and tranquil life. But  one ascends to heaven by  descending This is a mystery that so often overwhelms and disconcerts us.  The Lord invites you to live  the experience of the cross  and encounter Him in it,  allowing the Holy Spirit to transfigure it , anoint it, and transform it into a tree of life and salvation, making it fruitful and glorious.

…And follow me…    Follow in the footsteps of Jesus, seeking not to do your own will, but the will of the Father,  proclaiming Jesus as Lord of  your whole  life , letting his light illuminate every corner of your life and welcoming the Holy Spirit each day, asking him to renew your heart and your life.

For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it And we must take life seriously. Life is not a  game . We can get lost:  What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?

Come Holy Spirit!  (cf. _ Lk_  11, 13).
