The Ascension of the Lord: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró

Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the Gospel of this Sunday, June 1, 2025, entitled “The Ascension of the Lord.”

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the ASCENSION OF THE LORD, a feast with profound significance for our faith.

It is a feast that fills us with joy and hope, because Jesus, the Lord, the King of glory, conqueror of sin and death, ascended today, before the astonishment of the angels, to the highest heavens, as Mediator between God and men, as Judge of the world and Lord of the universe, to make us sharers in his divinity. He intercedes for us as a mediator who assures us of the perennial outpouring of the Spirit (cf. Preface).

The Word invites us to joy and hope, so important always, but especially in these times when so many false prophets seek to sow pessimism and despair.

No. Because Jesus Christ gave them numerous proofs that He was alive. Jesus Christ lives! We are not alone, abandoned to our “fate.” He is with us every day, until the end of time. And He is faithful. That is our rest. He is Lord of history, and history is the History of Salvation.

And Jesus Christ commanded them not to leave Jerusalem… That is the great trap the enemy sets for us: inviting us to live alone, without community, without the Church, which is the Body of Christ; without roots, building our lives on the sand of our feelings or the whims of the world’s fashions.

Do not leave Jerusalem! God did not create you for solitude, but for relationship, for communion, for giving. You cannot go alone. The Lord has given you brothers and sisters in the faith, to walk together toward the goal of heaven. And he invites you to build your life on the Rock, who is Jesus Christ.

And the Lord tells us: wait for the Father’s promise to be fulfilled. What promise? You will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.

And that is our strength and our hope. We do not know what will happen in the future. The Lord invites us not to be overwhelmed: it is not for you to know the times that the Father has established with his authority… You will receive the power of the Holy Spirit who will come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…

The important thing is not to know what will come, but to welcome the gift of the Holy Spirit to live everything with the Lord and experience the victory of Jesus Christ in your daily life, and thus be able to bear witness to this victory, that Jesus Christ lives and is Lord.

Jesus blesses you, speaks well of you. He loves you. He will never stop loving you… And he is with you every day, until the end of the age. This is the foundation of our hope: the certainty that nothing and no one can separate you from the love of God, manifested in Christ Jesus.

Come, Holy Spirit!
