Summer Homework with a Taste of Heaven
A summer to enjoy... and teach to love what truly matters
The school year is ending, and that long-awaited time has arrived: summer vacation. Time to rest, play, enjoy… and also to grow internally. Many families turn to the classic review books, and that’s fine. But what if this summer’s homework was different? What if, instead of focusing only on academics, we took advantage of it to take care of what’s most important: our children’s souls?
Throughout the year, we’re consumed by rushing. Between homework, activities, schedules, and quick dinners, there’s barely any time to stop and talk with them about the essentials: faith, God, the deeper meaning of life. Summer, however, gives us a different pace, slower, more available. If we don’t set our minds to it, if we don’t make a small plan, if we don’t set our sights on it, everything will slip away between trips and ice cream. But if we focus on it, it can be an unforgettable few weeks.
How about talking to them about the saints? Choose one each week, read their story, watch a movie, and imitate one of their actions. Saints aren’t distant figures: they’re friends from heaven who are still alive and active. Children are fascinated to discover that there were people like them who loved God madly.
What if we taught them new prayers? Not as an obligation, but as an adventure: praying from the heart, with family, on the beach, in the car, at bedtime. They could write a letter to God, visit Jesus in church, or learn to give thanks every night for what they’ve experienced.
And if we propose a small “mission” to them every day: do a good deed, help out at home, call a grandparent, forgive a friend. This is how we educate them in concrete love, the kind that transforms the world.
And above all, we have the opportunity to be consistent. Let them see that going to Mass on Sundays is non-negotiable. That when we plan a trip, just as we look for an on-call pharmacy or an open supermarket, we also naturally look for Mass times. Because that speaks volumes.
Summer is a golden opportunity to sow eternal seeds. It doesn’t take great resources, just intention and love. If this year we replace math homework with homework from the heart, our children will not only return to school with backpacks full of memories… but also with their souls a little closer to heaven. And that, in the end, is what truly matters.
