Saints like you: entrepreneurs, mothers, young people… examples of everyday life made holy

When we think of saints, we often imagine them as distant figures in our time, nuns or monks locked away in monasteries. However, the Catholic Church, with its wisdom and realism, has proposed models of holiness who walked the same streets as us, lived under similar pressures, and responded to the world’s challenges with a vibrant, everyday faith.

Pope Francis, in  Gaudete et Exsultate , encourages us to discover that holiness “is not about looking from afar, but about walking in the concrete.” Today we share stories of saints and blesses who were like you: workers, husbands and wives, young people, professionals, homemakers… ordinary lives that responded with extraordinary love.

1. Guadalupe Ortiz de Landázuri: holiness in the laboratory

Guadalupe was a chemical engineer from Madrid who worked in research, teaching, and social work. She was one of the first lay women of Opus Dei and brought faith to contexts where many believe it has no place: the university, the classroom, and science. Beatified in 2019, her life shows that study and work can be paths to encounter with God.

“Don’t look for God outside your work: He’s there, waiting for you among test tubes and formulas,” could sum up his spirituality.

2. Carlo Acutis: a digital genius at the service of faith

Carlo was an Italian teenager passionate about computers and, above all, about Jesus in the Eucharist. He created a website where he compiled and explained Eucharistic miracles from around the world. He lived with joy, simplicity, and surprising spiritual maturity. Beatified in 2020, he is a model of youthful, modern, and deeply Eucharistic holiness.

“Everyone is born as an original, but many die as photocopies,” Carlo said.

3. Chiara Corbella Petrillo: motherhood offered out of love

Chiara was a young Italian wife and mother. Her first two children died shortly after birth, and upon conceiving her third, she was diagnosed with cancer. She chose to delay aggressive treatments to protect her son’s life. She died at the age of 28, leaving behind a legacy of love, joy, and unwavering faith. Her testimony continues to touch hearts around the world.

“The essential thing is to look at Heaven and not lose hope,” he wrote shortly before his death.

4. Enrique Shaw: businessman with a Christian soul

Founder of ACDE (Christian Association of Business Leaders), this Argentine businessman applied the Church’s social doctrine in his business life. He promoted decent working conditions, fostered employee training, and lived his illness with exemplary character. His beatification is in progress.

“It’s not enough to provide jobs: we must give work a Christian meaning,” he said.

5. Marta Obregón: dignity defended with her life

Marta was a young university student from Burgos. She was kidnapped and murdered in 1992 after bravely resisting a sexual assault. Her testimony of chastity, faith, and fidelity to God has touched many consciences. Her cause for beatification as a martyr of virtue is ongoing.

6. Takashi Nagai: scientist, family man and witness in Hiroshima

A convert to Catholicism, a radiologist, and the father of two children, Takashi lived through the tragedy of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945. He lost his wife in the blast and, still ill from the radiation, dedicated the rest of his life to caring for the victims and proclaiming peace. He lived in voluntary poverty and constant prayer. Likewise, he was called the “Japanese Francis of Assisi.”

7. Saint Gianna Beretta Molla: mother and doctor

A pediatrician and mother of four, Gianna was a professional, active woman committed to her faith. When she was pregnant with her fourth daughter, she was diagnosed with a tumor. She chose not to have an abortion or undergo treatments that would have put her daughter’s life at risk. She died after giving birth in 1962. Likewise, she was canonized by Saint John Paul II in 2004.

“The value of a life is not measured by its length, but by the love with which it is lived,” is Gianna’s message.

8. Alberto Marvelli: engineer and politician

A young Italian committed to his faith and public life. An engineer, volunteer for the poor, and mayoral candidate, he died in a car accident at just 28 years old. His testimony of honest and charitable political service makes him a role model for those who want to live their faith in the public sphere. Beatified by Saint John Paul II in 2004.

9. María Cristina Cella Mocellin: mother martyr of love

Italian, wife, and mother of three. When she became pregnant for the third time, she was diagnosed with cancer. She refused treatments that could harm her child. She gave birth, but died shortly after. Beatified in 2021, she is a shining example of generous motherhood and dedication.

“God gave me a son: I cannot harm him to save myself,” she affirmed with faith.

10. José Gregorio Hernández: doctor of the poor

A Venezuelan physician and layman, he was beatified in 2021. He dedicated his life to healing the poorest and most needy, even though he himself lived in austere conditions. His reputation for holiness is enormous in Latin America, where many consider him a powerful intercessor and an example of a Christian physician.

You, too, can be a saint

Holiness is not a career for a select few. It is a calling for all. These men and women remind us that God wants to enter your family, your workplace, your university, you’re suffering, your business, your youth. You don’t need to be perfect, but rather allow yourself to be loved by Him, seek Him in your everyday life, and love as He loves.

As Benedict XVI said:  “Each of us is called to holiness; holiness consists in living in communion with Christ.”

And you? Are you ready to be a saint in jeans, a lab coat, a business suit, or a student backpack?

God calls you to be holy as you are, where you are.
