Leo XIV: Let Us Place Christ at the Heart of Our Existence and Apostolate
The Pope celebrates the 125th anniversary of the dedication of St. Anselm on the Aventine Hill and exhorts the Benedictine community to face contemporary challenges with a faith centered on Jesus Christ
“The abrupt changes we are witnessing challenge and question us, raising questions that were previously unknown.” With this reflection, Pope Leo XIV urged the Benedictine community to allow reality to challenge them and to respond from a faith that places Christ at the center of life.
The Pope presided over the Eucharist on Tuesday, November 11, the solemnity of Saint Martin of Tours, in the church of Saint Anselm, located on the Aventine Hill in Rome and the center of the complex that the Benedictine Confederation has guarded for more than a century.
Leo XIV recalled that this church, inaugurated 125 years ago at the initiative of Pope Leo XIII, arose to strengthen the Benedictine presence and unity within the Church. This project encompassed the institution of the Primate Abbot, the International College, and various initiatives that still define the site’s identity.
Monasteries: bastions in turbulent times
In his homily, the Pope emphasized that monasticism, from its beginnings, has been “on the frontier,” opening paths of prayer, work, and charity in remote territories. Thus, arid regions became prosperous spaces, not only materially, but primarily spiritually.
“The monastery,” he affirmed, “has distinguished itself as a place of development, peace, welcome, and unity, even in the darkest stages of history.”
Today, he continued, the obstacles persist: they change form, they become more complex, but they demand the same essential response given by Peter, Benedict and numerous witnesses of the Gospel: to recognize Christ as Savior and to materialize that faith in prayer, study and a holy existence.

A “vibrant heart” of the Benedictine universe
The Holy Father urged all the entities of the Aventine —church, monastery, Athenaeum, Liturgical Institute and pastoral initiatives— to move forward in harmony according to the guidelines of Saint Benedict, as an authentic “school of the service of the Lord”.
Taking the first reading, which evokes the river that springs from the Temple, the Pope likened it to a heart that pumps blood to the organism to vitalize each part.
In this “diligent hive”—as Saint Anselm described it—everything must originate in Christ and return to Him: the liturgy, lectio divina , scholarly inquiry, and pastoral accompaniment. All of this is carried out with monks from various nations and an openness to clergy, religious, and laity from diverse backgrounds.
Leo XIV expressed his desire that this complex be a focal point that sends a prophetic message to the Church and the world: that we form a chosen people to announce the wonders of God, who summoned us from the shadows to his admirable light.
Dedication: a bridge between the human and the divine
Reflecting on the meaning of the dedication of a temple, the Pope indicated that it is a solemn act in which a building is consecrated as a meeting place between the finite and the infinite.
The Pope quoted an illuminating fragment from the Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium , which presents the Church as human and divine, active and contemplative, immersed in the world but directed towards the city to come.
This dialectic, he observed, is integral to the existence of every individual, who yearns for answers that only God can provide. Therefore, he insisted, we need Jesus, “the Christ, the Son of the living God,” and we are called not only to find him, but also to share him with others.

A temple that emanates joy
The Holy Father concluded his homily by urging the assembly to identify the divine gifts received and, above all, the love with which He always precedes us.
When this flow is experienced in its fullness, he assured, the temple is transformed into “a space of joy,” where the beauty of sharing what has been received free of charge with others is experienced.
