The Pope in Naples: “May the longing for life not be overwhelmed by evil”
In a historic visit to Piazza del Plebiscito, the Pontiff cries out against inequality and encourages a city that refuses to surrender to resignation.
Naples has woken up with a different energy. Under the May sun, the Holy Father has walked the streets of a city that he himself describes as a place where a “longing for life, for justice, and for good” flows. In his encounter with the people, the Pontiff delivered a powerful and direct message: this deep desire for dignity cannot and must not be crushed by evil, discouragement, or the city’s historical resignation.
The day began with an intense spiritual moment at the Sanctuary of Pompeii, where the Pope led the Supplication to the Virgin of the Rosary before heading to the heart of Naples. Upon arriving at the Cathedral, he was warmly welcomed by thousands of faithful and the local clergy. Before them, he addressed a harsh reality while filled with hope. The Pope did not shy away from difficult topics, pointing to what he called a “geography of inequality” that still afflicts many areas of southern Italy.
“Brothers and sisters, in this city there flows a longing for life that cannot be defeated by evil. Do not be afraid to be witnesses of Christ and sowers of the future.”
During his speech in Piazza del Plebiscito, before an enthusiastic crowd that filled the square, the Pontiff analyzed the structural challenges that fuel poverty: income disparity, the lack of job prospects for young people, and school dropouts. For the Holy Father, these issues are not merely economic but social wounds that demand decisive action from the State and an unwavering commitment from civil society to halt the advance of organized crime.
The Pope urged Neapolitans not to let their hope be stolen. He reminded them that faith is not a refuge for isolation, but a driving force to transform reality. “Do not surrender to the logic of evil,” he insisted, making a special appeal to young people to become the protagonists of a new rebirth that places human dignity above any particular interest.
After an intense schedule that included moments of prayer before the relics of Saint Januarius and meetings with the most vulnerable sectors, the Pontiff bid farewell to the city, leaving behind a trail of encouragement. Naples, with its complexity and its immense heart, has today heard a voice that validates its daily struggles and elevates its “longing for life” to the level of a sacred mission.
