Do not be afraid of those who kill the body: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró
Sunday, June 21, 2026
Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the Gospel for the Sunday of June 2026 entitled, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body”
***
This Sunday, the Lord invites us to live in trust in God . He has invited us not to fear those who kill the body .
Fear appears so often in our lives; it’s a natural emotion. When we believe we’re in danger, fear arises as a defense mechanism that alerts us so we can overcome the threat. Up to this point, fear isn’t a problem; in fact, it’s necessary for survival.
The problem arises when fear takes hold of us , when it traps us and leaves us paralyzed. And when fear, beyond the real and concrete dangers we may face, is exploited by the enemy to keep us trapped in fear.
Because we cannot control our lives no matter how hard we try, the enemy easily sows the seeds of distrust , fear, “what will happen,” “what will become of me,” and “what will happen tomorrow” within us.
And we must defend ourselves against this , because otherwise it ends up leading us into a dead end, the alley of hopelessness, of anguish, of living in distress… the alley of living doubting God’s love.
And that is why the Word invites us to live by faith. Certainly, we do not control our lives. We don’t know if we will live tomorrow. We can make statistical calculations, but nothing more. We don’t know what will happen… And that is why we are called to live by faith. And what does faith tell us?
God created us out of love, He created you out of love, He is weaving a story of love and salvation with you, and the Lord guides your life. And not a single hair of your head will fall until the Lord wills it, and He wills it for your good.
And it is in that trust that we are called to live .
What will happen tomorrow?
We don’t know, but we do know one thing: and that is that nothing and no one can separate us from the love of God manifested in Christ Jesus.
Therefore, the Word invites us to trust : everything is foreseen by the Lord. That is why we sang in the Alleluia: “The Spirit of truth will testify about me,” says the Lord; “and you will testify…” And we heard in the first reading: “ They persecute me, but they stumble and are powerless.”
Do not be afraid, for there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed. For even though evil may sometimes seem to triumph, the victory belongs to Jesus Christ. Though the battle may be intense and hard, this war has been won! Through his death and resurrection, Jesus Christ has defeated Satan forever. Therefore, whoever lives by the Spirit of Jesus Christ lives in victory.
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. For the goal of our life is not to grow old, but to reach heaven. It is not men we should fear. What should concern us is not so much the judgment of men, but the judgment of God, because not everyone who says, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the Kingdom of Heaven (cf. Mt 7:21). And whoever denies me before men, I also will deny him before my Father who is in heaven.
Do not be afraid, you are worth more than many sparrows . We are in God’s hands. He is Lord of your life. God loves you and cares for you. Every moment. Every day.
Do not be afraid, for if you declare yourself for Jesus Christ, I will also declare myself for him before my Father who is in heaven…
Do not be afraid, for the Lord hears his poor, he does not despise his captives.
Take heart! Ask for the Holy Spirit. In the midst of difficulties, ask for the gift of fortitude so that you may be a witness of Jesus Christ in this generation!
Come, Holy Spirit!
