The Long Journey from Scientology Back to the Embrace of Faith
Nicole Kidman's Return
To understand Nicole Kidman, one must first understand that her relationship with transcendence is not a recent Hollywood fad, but a recurring theme that has marked both the highs and lows of her life. Born into a family with deep Catholic and Irish roots, the Oscar winner was raised with traditional values of the faith. However, her meteoric rise to fame in the 1990s led her down a spiritual path that lasted more than a decade.
Today, Nicole Kidman speaks openly about her Catholic faith, her attendance at Mass, and the fundamental role prayer plays in her home. But the road back was neither easy nor immediate.
The shadow of Hollywood and the years of estrangement
In 1990, upon marrying Tom Cruise, Kidman became immersed in the structure of the Church of Scientology, the spiritual organization of which her husband was the most visible figure. During the ten years of their marriage, the Australian actress gradually distanced herself from her Catholic roots.
Although Kidman maintained a low profile and never became a spokesperson for the group, the pressure from her surroundings and the indoctrination distanced the actress from the faith of her childhood. After a highly publicized and painful divorce in 2001, the actress not only had to rebuild her personal and professional life, but also her spiritual foundations.
Returning to the Church: A step of faith and conviction
The true turning point in Nicole Kidman’s spiritual life came with love and a desire to do things right from the start. In 2006, the actress began the formal process of annulling her previous marriage with church authorities, explicitly stating her desire to return to full communion with the Catholic Church.
On June 25, 2006, Nicole Kidman and New Zealand singer Keith Urban were married in an emotional Catholic ceremony at St. Patrick’s Chapel in Manly, Sydney, officiated by Father Paul Coleman, a lifelong friend of the Kidman family.
“The Catholic faith is the foundation on which I base my life. I have a very strong belief in God and I’m not ashamed to say so,” the actress declared in subsequent interviews with international media.
“For Kidman, faith is not an abstract theory, but the practical pillar that sustains her marriage and the education of her daughters.”
A faith lived in the intimacy of the home
Unlike other public figures who prefer to keep their beliefs private, Kidman has not hesitated to share how Catholicism shapes her family’s daily life at their Nashville residence:
- Family Mass: Kidman has stated on several occasions that they regularly attend church as a family, defining these visits as a necessary space of peace and reconnection amidst the whirlwind of their schedules.
- Values education: Together with Keith Urban, she has sought to educate her daughters under the principles of faith, shared prayer and respect for the sacred.
- Comfort in loss: The actress has confessed that prayer and hope in eternal life were her great pillars after the sudden death of her father, psychologist Antony Kidman, in 2014.
A serene voice in a secular environment
Nicole Kidman’s testimony stands out in Hollywood precisely because of its normalcy and coherence. Without resorting to strident rhetoric or confrontation, the star of The Hours and Big Little Lies represents the reality of many contemporary believers: people who have gone through disorientation and hardship to rediscover, with the maturity of years, the irreplaceable value of their roots.
Their story demonstrates that, even in the center of the most complex and secularized showcase on the planet, the yearning for God and the search for truth still find their way back home.
