Want to break a destructive habit? The secret lies in a phrase you hear every Sunday

Many of us go to Mass and repeat words out of habit, but there is a specific petition in the Eucharist that has the real power to transform your life if you choose to believe in it

Want to break a destructive habit? The secret lies in a phrase you hear every Sunday

We often face situations that seem impossible to change: alcohol addiction, drug use, a destructive pattern of infidelity, or even that constant resentment that embitters our daily lives. We’ve tried everything, sought outside help, attempted to change our willpower, and yet we stumble time and time again.

Father Ángel Espinosa de los Monteros invites us to pause at a precise moment in the Mass, that moment when the priest raises the Eucharist and pronounces:  “This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world . “

The difference between asking for forgiveness and asking for it to be taken away.

We often experience repentance through the lens of “forgiveness.” Asking for forgiveness is good, but forgiveness doesn’t always free us from the habit; it allows us to fall back into it and ask for forgiveness again. However, Father Ángel invites us to reflect on the word  “removal . “

What if, instead of just asking for forgiveness, you went to Mass with the genuine intention of surrendering to God that burden you can no longer bear? He insists,  “You don’t need to hit rock bottom to start changing .” You don’t need to wait until your life falls apart, until you lose your marriage, your job, or your family peace to make the decision to climb out of the hole.

An exercise in faith, not a ritual

The proposal is simple, but it requires brutal honesty:

  1. Identify your burden:  Be aware of what you are fed up with (whether it’s a serious addiction or that constant judgment and criticism of others).
  2. Make it personal:  Don’t recite the response from the Mass as just another requirement. When you say, “Lord, I am not worthy…,” combine that humility with a desperate and sincere plea:  “Lord, take this away from me . “
  3. Seek the source:  If the problem is deep-seated, seek the Eucharist more frequently. Father Ángel says he knows hundreds of people who, after embracing this practice, have managed to overcome vices that had bound them for years.

The power of this message lies in the fact that it’s not a magic formula, but an  invitation to total surrender . There are many things in our lives that, no matter how much effort we put in, we cannot change on our own.

The question isn’t whether God can help you get out of that hole, the question is:  Will you dare to ask for it with the necessary faith the next time you hear those words?

Do you know someone who needs this message of hope today? Share this reflection and help us bring the possibility of real change to those who need it most.
