Under the care of Gemelli: The Church unites in prayer ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s surgery
The Pontiff has been admitted to the Roman hospital for the removal of an early-detected pulmonary nodule, while the Holy See reorganizes his schedule and calls for calm
All eyes in the Catholic world are on the Agostino Gemelli University Polyclinic in Rome. On the afternoon of Tuesday, October 13, Pope Leo XIV was admitted to the hospital for surgery to remove a nodule from his lung. The operation, performed by the thoracic surgery team headed by Professor Stefano Margaritora, begins a convalescence period estimated at approximately one week and has led the Prefecture of the Papal Household to cancel all public and private audiences until Tuesday, October 20.
The discovery, as the Pope himself explained during the Sunday Angelus prayer in which he announced the news, occurred after he underwent routine checkups. The director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, emphasized that the condition is in a very early and well-defined stage. Following the announcement, the institutional and spiritual response was swift, conveying an unequivocal message of medical confidence and calm.
Reactions in the Curia and changes in the Vatican agenda
On the eve of a conference on John Paul I at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin acknowledged the shock of the news but emphasized the Holy Father’s composure. “It was a bolt from the blue because no one expected it, but these are the surprises of God,” Parolin declared after speaking with the Pope by telephone. The Cardinal stressed that early detection is key to a swift resolution and praised the “example of great serenity” shown by Leo XIV throughout.
The Pope’s hospitalization has significantly disrupted the institutional rhythm of the Holy See. Although he held his morning audiences on Monday, he had to miss the afternoon sessions of the summit commemorating the tenth anniversary of the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia . Father Giacomo Costa, the meeting’s methodological coordinator, announced that the Eucharist scheduled for Wednesday, April 14, in St. Peter’s Square will be presided over by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Dean of the College of Cardinals. Furthermore, at the Pope’s express wish, the publication of the symposium’s summary report has been postponed until his release from the hospital, as he wishes to review it firsthand and offer his own assessments.
International wave of affection and prayer
Since the confirmation of the surgery, a wave of spiritual support has been unleashed worldwide. In Rome, Cardinal Vicar Baldassare Reina is leading the recitation of the Holy Rosary this Tuesday at 6:00 PM from the St. John Paul II Chapel at Gemelli Hospital—broadcast live by Vatican Radio and Vatican News channels—while all parishes and religious communities in the Diocese of Rome have been urged to join in prayer.
Expressions of solidarity are pouring in from all five continents and transcending ecclesiastical boundaries. Of particular note is the support of the Order of Saint Augustine—the Pope’s religious order—which is organizing vigils and has created a virtual “spiritual branch” with contributions from the faithful in 39 countries. Messages of support and wishes for a speedy recovery have also been conveyed by the President of the Japanese Bishops’ Conference, Cardinal Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi; the Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Sviatoslav Shevchuk; the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SCEAM), Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo; the Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta, Fra’ John Dunlap; the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa; and even the prison ministry in Italy.
This cry of encouragement has been joined by Louis Prevost, the Pope’s brother, who from Florida fully trusts that the intervention will proceed without complications and that Leo XIV will be able to resume his mission at the head of the universal Church with renewed vitality.
