“A pain that pierces the soul”: Pope Leo XIV mourns the railway tragedy that has brought sorrow to Spain
The Pontiff has expressed his deep dismay in a telegram sent to the Archbishop of Toledo, in which he offers prayers for the eternal rest of those who died in Urda and provides steadfast encouragement to the emergency response teams
The grief over the train disaster that struck the town of Urda in Toledo on Tuesday has resonated far beyond the world’s borders. Pope Leo XIV expressed his “deep sorrow” upon learning of the tragic accident between two high-speed trains that claimed the lives of dozens of people.
In an official telegram sent to the Archbishop of Toledo and signed by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope expressed his deepest solidarity with the Spanish people during this time of bewilderment and mourning. With profound spiritual sympathy, the Holy Father offered prayers for the eternal rest of those who lost their lives suddenly in the collision, while also conveying his heartfelt condolences and direct affection to the families mourning the loss of their loved ones.
The Pope also offered words of encouragement to the injured who are fighting for their recovery in hospitals and expressly acknowledged the immense work of the emergency services. In his message, Leo XIV strongly urged rescue teams to “persevere in the relief and humanitarian assistance work” that continues on the ground.
The telegram concludes by imparting to all those affected, as well as to those collaborating in the relief efforts, the comforting apostolic blessing as a sign of Christian hope anchored in the risen Lord.
