This is how children benefit from spending time with their grandparents
July 26th is the feast day of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, the parents of the Virgin Mary and grandparents of Jesus. We take this opportunity to talk about the importance of grandparents in family life
Grandparents embody the purest expression of filial love; the bond they form with their grandchildren is truly special. Both are nourished by the love they express. Grandchildren become a source of life and teach grandparents to see with eyes of joy and hope. At the same time, grandchildren experience a unique bond with their grandparents, who undoubtedly leave a profound mark on their lives.
Educational and emotional benefits for children
The way grandparents raise children brings significant benefits. Therefore, grandparents tend to:
Being more patient and less stressed in daily life allows them to be more affectionate with children and consistently show them emotional interest through an empathetic relationship.
Emotional communication is a fundamental pillar that allows grandchildren to feel much more understood by their grandparents than by their parents.
To correct with their grandchildren the mistakes they made with their children and, therefore, give parents a perspective on certain aspects.
At the same time, grandparents are much less critical and focus more on the good things than the bad, thus highlighting the child’s strengths rather than weaknesses.
Another nice feature of grandparents’ parenting style is that they help grandchildren gain independence from their parents, as well as socialize with people of different ages.
Often, grandparents act as “advocates” for children , serving as a bridge to validate feelings and resolve complications that create obstacles in coexistence and communication between parents and children.
In the face of a crisis and family instability such as a separation or death of the parents, grandparents are an indispensable emotional support for grandchildren.
So, as parents, we have the responsibility to foster strong and harmonious bonds between our children and grandparents, and to treat them with respect, understanding, and affection. Happy Grandparents’ Day!
