The  Word of God  that we proclaim today presents us with one of the problems that has always concerned humanity throughout the ages: the  thirst  for happiness, the  thirst  for fulfillment, the  thirst  for meaning in life.

Indeed,  the person , as an intelligent being open to God,  constantly experiences how material things , although attractive and giving us a certain immediate satisfaction,  are not able to quench the  thirst  for happiness and fulfillment that we have.

One of the  major problems  facing man today is  existential dissatisfaction:  sometimes we live dissatisfied, frustrated, empty, without ever quite finding the meaning of life, without joy, without direction…

And in a paradoxical way, because  we have many things , but  nothing quite fulfills us.

And we experience this dissatisfaction  because sometimes we place our hearts in things that can never truly fill them . Sometimes we seek life in idols: money, power, pleasure, success…

But it’s nothing more than an  illusion.  Idols only increase our thirst . Passion for material things leads us into a cycle of  selfishness,  which only results in emptiness and dissatisfaction.

What can quench this  thirst ?  The  Word of God  gives us the answer:  God. He is the only one capable of calming our  thirst , He is the only one capable of filling our hearts, He is the only one who can make us truly happy.

The verse from Alleluia reminds us of this:  Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

The human heart is so vast and deep that only God can fill it.  As Saint Augustine said:  You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.

The path to finding happiness and meaning in life is to have God in your heart, to be reconciled with Him, to have Him as Lord of your life.  Let your life be centered on Him, and you will have within you a  wellspring  that will quench your thirst.  You will have within you the living water of God’s grace, of the Holy Spirit, which will help you find meaning in life and attain true happiness,  because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

When you let Jesus Christ reign in your life , in your heart… you will be able to say, like Jesus: “  My food is to do the will of the Father,”  and you will have a life full of meaning. You will not  live  like a wanderer,  but  like  a pilgrim.  And you will see the second reading fulfilled in your life:  that nothing  can separate us from the love of God manifested in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

How is your life?  Are you happy? Is God in your heart?  Where is the center of your life?

Do you want to be happy?  Let the Lord fill your heart,  live united with God, and the desert of your life will be transformed into a garden,  because you will see Jesus Christ in the midst of your life. You will see how the Holy Spirit grants you the gift of savoring God’s love in the midst of your daily life, amidst the struggles and difficulties of each day. For  is the Lord in the midst of your life or not?
