The violence in Gaza is “a human tragedy”
Archbishop Caccia's Address to the UN
On 20 October 2023, the Holy See’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations, Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, called on the UN to take urgent action to stop the violence in the Gaza Strip.
In an address to the Security Council, Archbishop Caccia said the violence in Gaza is “a human tragedy” that is causing “unimaginable” suffering.
Archbishop Caccia called on the UN to work for an immediate ceasefire and to create the conditions for a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Archbishop Caccia’s speech was met with a positive response from Security Council members. The President of the Council, Indonesian Ambassador to the UN Dian Triansyah Djani, said Archbishop Caccia’s speech “was a timely reminder of the importance of peace and security in the region”.
Archbishop Caccia’s comments are welcome. The violence in the Gaza Strip is a serious problem that needs an urgent solution. The UN must take action to stop the violence and create the conditions for lasting peace.
