The Sorrow of Circumcision and the Joy of the Name of Jesus
Third Sunday of Saint Joseph
On the third Sunday, meditate on the sorrow of Saint Joseph at seeing the blood of Jesus shed in the circumcision, on the eighth day after his birth, fulfilling the Mosaic law (Lk 2:21).
His joy arises from bestowing the name “Jesus,” which means “Savior,” as the angel instructed him, applying the merits of that precious blood for salvation (Mt 1:21).
Tradition highlights Saint Joseph’s obedience to divine law as a model of virtue.
Saint Teresa of Avila recommends him as a master of prayer, stating that he never failed her in her requests.
This reflection teaches us to engrave the name of Jesus on our hearts.
Prayer
O most obedient executor of divine laws, glorious Saint Joseph! The blood that the Child Jesus shed at the circumcision pierced your heart; but the name of Jesus that was then imposed upon you, gave you life and filled you with joy.
Through this pain and this joy, grant us to live free from all sin so that we may expire rejoicing with the most holy name of Jesus in our hearts and on our lips.
