The Pope brings comfort and closeness to the sick at Saint Paul Catholic Hospital
After the grand Mass in Douala, an intimate and tender encounter with those suffering in body and soul
On Friday, April 17, 2026, after celebrating a Mass for a large crowd at the Japoma Stadium in Douala, the Pope made a private visit to Saint Paul Catholic Hospital, a center run by the Archdiocese of Douala and located in the Bassa neighborhood. There, away from the crowds, he offered his comfort and support to the patients, especially the children, women, and healthcare staff who work daily under particularly difficult conditions.
Accompanied by the hospital director, the Pope toured several wards of the center, where accessible, high-quality healthcare is provided without interruption. He paused in the chapel for a moment of prayer, recited the Lord’s Prayer with those present, and blessed all the patients, their families, and the staff who were with him. With great tenderness, he approached both children and adults, shaking hands and sharing the closeness of the Successor of Peter to human suffering.

In the courtyard, he briefly greeted the staff and a few patients who were present. The visit, which concluded shortly before 2:00 p.m. local time, left a visible mark of comfort: many patients and their families received the Pope’s personal blessing before he departed for the airport to return to Yaoundé, where a meeting with students and academics from the Catholic University of Central Africa awaited him.
The Pope’s presence at Saint Paul Hospital touched, both symbolically and literally, the wounds of the flesh and those of the soul. In a context marked by suffering, his gesture served as a reminder that the healing invoked by faith encompasses both body and spirit, enveloping deep traumas with hope and tenderness.
A simple yet powerful gesture: the Church reaching out to those most in need, without grandiloquent speeches, simply with the closeness of one who knows that suffering deserves to be accompanied. A visit that, beyond the cameras, will remain etched in the hearts of those who received that papal touch in the midst of their trial.
