The Fight Against Lust: A Battle Worth Winning

“It’s not a slip-up or a prank. Lust is a poison of the soul that darkens the intellect, weakens the will, and enslaves the heart. Prevention is better than cure… and it’s best never to fall into the abyss”

The Fight Against Lust: A Battle Worth Winning

In a world that seems designed to feed the basest passions, Father Ángel Espinoza de los Monteros gives us a clear, direct and unvarnished talk about one of the most destructive vices of our time:  lust .

He’s not talking about something distant or foreign. He’s talking about something that enters through our eyes, through the screen, through music, through fashion, and through the “small” temptations that end up dominating entire lives. And he does so with the authority of someone who knows the human soul and the true price of enslavement.

Why isn’t lust “just a little sin”?

The priest puts it bluntly: Lust  is not a small sin or a simple weakness . It is a poison that:

  • It obscures intelligence
  • It weakens the will
  • It enslaves the heart

Unlike other vices that can be combated with a well-deserved break or firm advice, lust is more like alcoholism or drug addiction: once it takes hold, it’s incredibly difficult to break free. The modern world knows this perfectly well and promotes it everywhere—television, social media, music, advertising—because a person dominated by lust is  easy to manipulate  and generates enormous profit.

It’s no longer just “a man’s thing.” Today, women and men alike are exposed to it on the street, at work, on their phones. The world changed decades ago, and temptation has become more accessible than ever.

The practical guide we all need

Father Angel shares a simple yet powerful list of spiritual weapons to win this battle:

  1. Guard your eyes.  The battle begins with your gaze. An impure image is etched in your imagination and feeds inner sin. Practice  guarding your eyes . Don’t look at what you know will lead you to sin. Christ said it bluntly: “If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.” It’s better to enter Heaven with one less eye than to enter Hell with your whole body.
  2. Flee from occasions of sin.  Don’t fight temptation… stay away from it! Impure social media, indecent TV shows, degrading music (including reggaeton and perreo), immoral environments. He who loves his soul cuts out at the root what makes him fall.
  3. Discipline the Body.  A body without discipline becomes a tyrant of the soul. Moderation in food and drink, exercise, avoiding idleness, and small voluntary mortifications (giving up chocolate, watching less television, etc.) help to strengthen the will. Saint Paul summed it up: “I discipline my body and bring it under control.”
  4. Pray the Holy Rosary.  Lust fears the Virgin Mary. The Rosary is a spiritual sword against impurity. Whoever prays it with perseverance receives a special grace to live in purity. When temptation comes, take up the Rosary: it crushes the serpent’s head.
  5. Frequent Confession:  The devil wants you to hide in the darkness. Christ wants you to rise into the light. Confession cleanses the soul, strengthens the will, and restores grace. Don’t be discouraged if you fall: get up as many times as necessary. Discouragement is another weapon of the enemy.
  6. Fill your soul with noble things.  An empty soul is fertile ground for temptation. Fill it with love, apostolic work, honest labor, service to others, prayer, and spiritual reading. Purity is not just about avoiding evil; it is about passionately loving all that is good. Even those who are not believers can begin by filling their lives with good works and sincere love.
  7. Remember why you were created.  You were not created for fleeting pleasure, but for Heaven, for God, for eternal joy. Every time you resist temptation, your soul grows stronger. Every victory is another step toward holiness.

The price of defeat and the greatness of victory

If you’re young and give in now, you’ll enter marriage wounded, or simply unfaithful. Lust promises pleasure but delivers slavery, double lives, and inner emptiness.

Christ, on the other hand, promises the cross —the cross of purity, of fidelity, of humility— but in the end he delivers  eternal glory .

The world wants weak men and women, slaves to their passions. Christ wants  free, pure, and courageous men and women .

Purity is not weakness. It is the mark of true warriors of the soul.

Dear friends, this message isn’t just for those already struggling. It’s preventative. It’s medicine. It’s a lifeline thrown before you fall into the hole.

Pass it on to your children, your friends, anyone about to enter adolescence or a vulnerable stage of life. We don’t know who needs it… but many do.

Let’s do all the good we can.
