The Deepest Need: Do We Really Need God?

Priorities change with age, and why, in the end, there is only one need that transcends all others

The Deepest Need: Do We Really Need God?

We begin with a powerful statement:  we all need God. And it’s not just a general message; it’s personal:  you need God. This truth often clashes with our perception of self-sufficiency. Many people believe that, with health, material possessions, and stability, they don’t need Him. However, this perspective ignores something fundamental: life happens, and our needs change.

Father Ángel Espinosa offers us a journey through human life, showing how our priorities shift with age. As babies, we need milk, diapers, and affection. At five, we crave games and sweets; at twelve, technological gadgets; at eighteen, independence and opportunities. And so, it seems that God is outside our concerns.

However, time teaches us another truth. People like Carlo Acutis, canonized for his profound devotion since childhood, remind us that true holiness is loving God and doing His will. It’s not about spectacular miracles, but about living with God at the forefront of our lives.

When we reach adulthood and old age, things change. We no longer need skates, cars, or cell phones; what truly matters is peace, love, respect, and, above all, the presence of God in our lives. In the words of Father Ángel: “When you are about to leave this world, believe me, you need nothing but God.”

This reflection invites us to look honestly at our priorities. Traveling, enjoying good food, or having pleasurable experiences are important, but they should not replace our essential need. In the end, as Saint Augustine said, sooner or later we recognize that the only prevailing need is to return to God, to where we come from and where we are going.

Let us do all the good we can, cultivate love and peace, and remember that the greatest need of human beings transcends the material: we need God.
