Sowers of Peace and Joy

A Path to Holiness in Everyday Life through the Legacy of Saint Josemaría Escrivá

Sowers of Peace and Joy

We live in a society overflowing with technological advances and communication possibilities, yet simultaneously  experiencing a rise in loneliness, tension, and conflict . Peace seems increasingly fragile, and genuine joy is often mistaken for fleeting happiness. In this context,  Christians are called to be a hopeful presence, bringing serenity where there is unrest, and joy where discouragement has taken root.

The world needs people who, through their example, demonstrate that another way of living is possible:  a life anchored in love for God and in generous and attentive service to others.

Peace begins in the heart

There can be no peace in society without inner peace within each person.  True peace is born from a clear conscience, from a heart filled with God, a heart that welcomes everyone and is willing to forgive.  Those who live dominated by resentment, envy, or selfishness will find it difficult to cultivate peace and harmony around them.

On the contrary, those who cultivate humility, patience, and understanding become, almost without intending to, true peacemakers.  Every gesture of reconciliation, every kind word, and every act of service contributes to creating a more humane, more Christian environment.

Another factor that fosters peace is understanding one’s purpose in life. This means  having a clear and concrete life plan, with goals in the different dimensions of the person—head and heart—along with spirituality, grounded in authentic values and principles that give meaning and coherence to life.

Joy , a sign of the Christian

Joy is one of the most attractive characteristics of the Christian life.  It is not a superficial optimism or an ignoring of difficulties, but a deep trust that God guides our lives and never abandons those who place their hope in Him.

True joy remains even in the midst of suffering because it originates in God’s love. It is a serene, contagious, and hopeful joy that illuminates the face and heart of those who experience it.

Joy is a consequence of personal peace and the optimism that overflows in the heart, due to a positive outlook on the different situations we encounter each day.

The teaching of Saint Josemaría

The founder of Opus Dei, Saint Josemaría Escrivá, made peace and joy two essential characteristics of the Christian spirit . He often encouraged everyone to be  “sowers of peace and joy,”  convinced that a child of God should bring hope to all those he met along his path.

Saint Josemaría taught that holiness is attained in the midst of ordinary life: in professional work, in family life, in studies, in friendship, and in daily activities.  It is precisely in these everyday places, which overflow with transcendence, that we must sow peace through our example, our professional competence, our spirit of service, and our approachability.

He also reminded us that  “peace is a consequence of war,” referring to the inner struggle: against selfishness, impatience, pride, and everything that separates us from God. Only those who strive to win these inner battles can transmit true serenity to others.

Sowing seeds in everyday life

Being sowers of peace doesn’t require extraordinary actions.  It’s enough to live ordinary things extraordinarily well. Listening attentively, thinking carefully, avoiding destructive criticism, forgiving sincerely, smiling, giving thanks, faithfully fulfilling our daily duties, and genuinely caring for others. These are seeds that produce abundant fruit.

Each day offers countless opportunities to brighten the lives of those around us.  A word of encouragement can change someone’s difficult day; a smile can restore hope; a small favor done with love can draw a soul closer to God.

The Lord still needs men and women who will be instruments of peace in a world that is sometimes divided. What is needed are not grand speeches, but consistent lives that reflect the Gospel in every detail.

At the end of each day, we can ask ourselves: Have I sown peace in my family today? Have I brought joy and serenity to my workplace? Have I drawn someone closer to God, perhaps through my example? These questions can become a true program for Christian living.

Conclusion: Change the world from within

Saint Josemaría was convinced that  the world changes when hearts change.  One by one. Every Christian, by living a holy life—their work, their daily duties—can transform society from within, like yeast that ferments dough and gives it shape and beauty.

Today more than ever, our time needs men and women who are true sowers of peace and joy.  May our lives, illuminated by faith and enriched by God’s grace, leave in our wake a trail of peace, joy, love, and hope.  For where there is joy, there is hope . This will be the best testimony that Christ lives in us and acts through our small, everyday deeds. Perhaps without realizing it, but doing his “work,” illuminating our paths.

P.S. These reflections are written on June 26, the anniversary of the death of  Saint Josemaría,  Founder of Opus Dei.
