Today we celebrate a special feast: the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is not a mystery narrated in any Gospel, but a tradition long held in the collective consciousness that became “official” just over seventy years ago. Many generations have seen, with good reason, in the image of the woman of the Apocalypse an image of Mary: the young girl who, in the hands of the Almighty, gave birth to the one who would be the savior of the world. These same images lead us to discover the new faces of evil, to denounce its horns of power, but also to strengthen our hope in triumph—not personal or individualistic, but by uniting ourselves to the risen Jesus. Thus, Mary becomes for each of us a force that encourages us in the fight against all kinds of evil and fills us with confidence, knowing in whom we have placed all our trust.

The beautiful canticle that Saint Luke places on her lips reflects the entire attitude of the disciple who seeks to follow the path of salvation. She knows she is small, yet in the hands of  “the Almighty ,” she knows she is humbled and a servant, yet a bearer of life; she knows she is in pain, yet with a joy that fills her spirit with gladness and her soul glorifies the Lord. Likewise, we, her children, want to be like Mary. We recognize ourselves as sinners, immersed in a stormy sea, but with a star that guides us to Jesus. We do not succumb to trials and storms, because we have our help in God, and He is our refuge. Like Mary, our hope is placed in the presence of the Lord in the midst of his people. But like Mary, we must proclaim ourselves servants, humble, and welcome into our hearts the power of his Word.

It is true that there are serious difficulties today, just as there were in the early Christian communities, but today Mary inspires our hope and our commitment to transform this world, to make it what Jesus desired: a place of fraternity, where we all have a place at the table God has prepared for us. May Mary, by awakening in us the desire for praise and thanksgiving, grant us to discover God’s presence in our midst and to see with new eyes the reality we are living. If we know where we are going, we cannot lose our way. With Mary, in her Assumption, our hope is awakened.
