Pope Leo XIV in Istanbul: A Call to Fraternity with the Elderly During His Apostolic Journey to Turkey
The Holy Father Highlights the Value of Welcome and the Wisdom of the Elderly in a World Dominated by Efficiency
During his first Apostolic Journey to Turkey and Lebanon, Pope Leo XIV dedicated a moving portion of his agenda to the most vulnerable: the elderly. This morning, the Pontiff visited the Little Sisters of the Poor’s Home for the Elderly in Istanbul, a center that represents an oasis of fraternity in an increasingly fast-paced society. With a warm greeting and profound reflections, the Holy Father reminded those present that true Christian charity is not limited to helping, but rather to sharing as brothers and sisters, and he affirmed the irreplaceable role of the elderly as “the wisdom of a people.”
The meeting, which took place in the heart of the vibrant transcontinental city, brought together the nuns of the congregation, staff of the center, benefactors, and, above all, the elderly residents, who greeted the Pope with applause and grateful smiles. Leo XIV, visibly moved by the warm, familial atmosphere, began his address by expressing gratitude for the “gift of welcome” that permeates the place. “This is the secret of Christian charity: before being for others, being with others, in a sharing based on fraternity,” he emphasized, evoking the example of Jesus as the brother sent by the Father.
The visit is part of an apostolic journey aimed at strengthening ecumenical ties and engaging in dialogue with the social realities of the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Turkey, the cradle of several early Christian communities and home to a Catholic minority in a predominantly Muslim context, offers the Pope a platform to promote peace and solidarity. However, this specific act with the elderly highlights a priority of Leo XIV’s pontificate: the defense of human dignity at all stages of life, especially in a world where aging is often perceived as a burden.

In his remarks, the Pope lamented how the culture of efficiency and materialism has eroded respect for the elderly. “In many social contexts, the sense of respect for the elderly has been lost,” he warned, citing the teachings of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who repeatedly described the elderly as “a treasure for grandchildren, for families, for all of society.” This reflection is not only theological but also an urgent call to action: in a country like Turkey, where the population is aging rapidly and care systems are limited, initiatives like this nursing home become beacons of hope.
The Little Sisters of the Poor, founded in the 19th century by Jeanne Jugan, have extended their global mission to places like Istanbul, where they care for dozens of elderly people with modest resources. The superior of the center welcomed the Pope, emphasizing how prayer and patience sustain their daily work. Leo XIV, in response, invoked divine blessing upon all those present, asking the Lord to accompany them in this “not easy” task.
This papal gesture comes at a time of regional tensions, with conflicts in Syria and Lebanon displacing thousands of elderly people. The message of fraternity could resonate far beyond the walls of the nursing home, inspiring religious and civil leaders to prioritize the protection of the vulnerable. As the Pope continues his journey to Beirut, his time in Istanbul leaves a mark of tenderness and a reminder: in the diversity of ages and cultures, the Church is built as a united family.

____________________________________
Dear sisters and brothers, good morning!
I am deeply grateful for Sister’s words of welcome, and for the hospitality shown by all of you. Hospitality is a gift of this home! It is truly a gift that comes from God and is brought to fruition by the Little Sisters of the Poor, the staff, the benefactors, and also by all the residents, in your daily life together. Thank you to everyone!
I would like to share two brief reflections with you.
The first is inspired by your name, dear Sisters, for you are “Little Sisters of the Poor.” This is a beautiful name, and one that makes us think! Yes, the Lord has called you not only to assist or help the poor, but has also called you to be their “sisters!” You are to be like Jesus, whom the Father sent to us not only to help and serve us, but also to be our brother. The secret of Christian charity is that before being for others, we must first be with others in a communion based on fraternity.
The second reflection was suggested to me by you, the dear residents of this house. You are the elderly. This word, “elderly,” today risks losing its truest meaning. In many social contexts, where efficiency and materialism dominate, the sense of respect for elderly people has been lost. In contrast, Sacred Scripture and good traditions teach us that – as Pope Francis loved to repeat – the elderly are the wisdom of a people, a treasure for their grandchildren, families and society as a whole.
Therefore, a double thank you to this home, which welcomes people in the name of fraternity, and does so particularly with the elderly. We know that this is not easy, as it requires a lot of patience and prayer. So now, let us pray to the Lord to accompany and sustain you. Upon all of you, I invoke God’s blessings.
