Philosophy: An Essential Bridge Between Faith, Reason, Church, and World

Message of Pope Leo XIV to the International Congress of Philosophy — Asunción, Paraguay, October 8-10, 2025

Philosophy: An Essential Bridge Between Faith, Reason, Church, and World

In his message to the International Congress of Philosophy, entitled Contributions to Cultures: Philosophy, Christianity, and Latin America, Pope Leo XIV emphasizes the richness that philosophical thought brings to the dialogue between faith and reason, and its capacity to shed light on contemporary challenges.

Philosophy does not threaten faith; it enriches it

Leo XIV warns against an ancient temptation: to reject philosophical reflection for fear of “contaminating” the purity of the faith. He cites Pius XII, Karl Barth, and Saint Augustine to affirm that such distrust is equivalent to a lack of love for wisdom. Far from remaining on the sidelines, believers are called to engage in dialogue with the different philosophical approaches in the Scriptures. From this interaction can emerge a witness of faith that speaks with sincerity rather than with excessively apologetic arguments.

Dignity, truth, and the dangers of a rationalism without faith

For the Pontiff, thinking that human reason and will alone are sufficient to reach the truth is a dangerous illusion. When reason closes itself off from the light of faith, it can fall into relativism, pessimism, or disdain for human beings. On the other hand, a fruitful philosophy is one that is in conformity with the truth of being and open to the grace that transcends it. In times when many people and values seem disposable, well-directed philosophical thought reveals human dignity and the profound structure of reality, pointing to the Creator and Redeemer.

Technology, modernity and the persistent questions

The Pope recalls Saint Justin, Saint Bonaventure, and Saint Thomas Aquinas, who affirmed that faith and reason are not opposed but rather complement each other, and cites Saint John Paul II’s Fides et ratio as an expression of this tradition. In a world where technological proliferation risks obscuring the most fundamental questions, the Christian philosopher must be a guardian of meaning, someone who challenges with profound questions what is often taken for granted.

Philosophy as a path to intelligent evangelization

Finally, Leo XIV insists that philosophy—especially in its interrogative dimension rather than its answers—helps discern the values and conflicts of each culture. Believing philosophers should not be confined within their own language, but rather situate cultural traditions within the universal horizon of truth. In this way, the Christian message reaches us more clearly, as it is translated intellectually and culturally for all.
