November: The Month That Unites Heaven and Earth
Traditions, Indulgences for the Dead, and Prayer for the Historic Journey of Pope Leo XIV
The Catholic calendar sets aside November as a spiritual bridge between the living, the saints, and the souls in purification. Two dates mark its beginning: November 1, the Solemnity of All Saints, and November 2, All Souls’ Day. These are not mere commemorations, but an invitation to practice the highest form of charity: praying for those who can no longer pray for themselves.
The custom of visiting cemeteries, lighting candles, and offering Masses for the dead dates back to the early Christians. During the octave from November 1st to 8th, the Church grants a plenary indulgence applicable exclusively to the souls in Purgatory. To obtain it, one simply needs to visit a cemetery, recite the Lord’s Prayer, and fulfill the usual conditions: recent confession, communion, prayer for the Pope, and total rejection of sin, even venial sin.
Concrete actions for a fruitful November
- Attend Mass and receive Communion for a specific deceased person.
- Pray the Rosary as a family for loved ones who are no longer with us.
- Perform works of mercy: visit the sick, give alms, or forgive offenses.
The month culminates with the Solemnity of Christ the King (November 23) and the first Sunday of Advent (November 30), the feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle, preparing the heart for Christmas.
First Apostolic Journey of Leo XIV: From November 27 to December 2, the Pope will visit Turkey and Lebanon in a gesture of closeness to the Eastern Churches. In Istanbul, he will participate in the commemoration of the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea alongside Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. In Beirut, he will pray at the tomb of Saint Charbel and celebrate Mass for reconciliation in the Middle East.
The Holy See has urged the faithful to accompany this journey with intense prayer, offering indulgences and sacrifices for the safety of the Pontiff and for peace in the region.
November is not just a month of memories: it is an opportunity to accelerate the journey of souls to Heaven and renew our own hope in the resurrection.
