How to Live Summer with Faith (as a Family and Without Looking Like Martians)
Relax, enjoy, and follow Jesus amidst ice cream, excursions, and family gatherings. Because summer is no excuse to disconnect from faith… or good humor
Summer is here: heat, vacations, less rushing… and what about faith? Well, the same as always, but in flip-flops. It’s not about reciting litanies on the beach or looking like misplaced mystics, but about living our faith with simplicity and joy, wherever we are and with whomever we’re with. As Pope Francis says: Christians don’t put on a show, they simply live with consistency.
1. Prayer also has daylight saving time
Prayer doesn’t disappear in summer, it just changes location and format. Why not pray upon waking while gazing at the sea? Or bless the food at the beach bar (without making a fuss)? God is where we are. And if the children get tired, a simple “Thank you, Lord, for this beautiful day (and for the holidays)” is enough.
2. To bear witness without speeches (with simple gestures)
In summer we’re more relaxed, but not on a spiritual vacation. It’s enough to continue being kind, helping out at home, speaking well of others, listening patiently… Small details that speak of God without shouting His name. As Saint Francis of Assisi said: “Preach always, and if necessary, use words.”
3. Family plans where God is present
-
Walks in nature invite you to admire creation. There’s no need to give an ecological sermon; simply say, “What a marvel God has made!”
-
Visit a beautiful church in the place where we are: go inside, be silent, admire the sacred art and, if appropriate, pray a little.
-
Sunday Mass , even if we’re away: finding a local parish can be quite an adventure… and a pleasant surprise to meet other believers!
4. Conversations that leave a mark
Holidays are a great time to talk as a family: about life, dreams, doubts… and also about faith. Without forcing, without lecturing. Simply sharing what’s inside. And listening a lot.
5. Help when the opportunity arises
Sometimes in summer we have more time to look out for others: perhaps helping that elderly neighbor who is alone, collaborating in a food drive, or simply being more patient with the family (which is not always easy when it’s 35 degrees).
6. Enjoy… without regrets!
Faith is not the enemy of healthy enjoyment. We can have fun, laugh, relax, and disconnect from stress. Saint John Bosco said that “a sad saint is a sorry saint.” So, let’s have joy and a sense of humor!
Summer can be a gift for our spiritual life. All it takes is staying connected to God, living authentically, and enjoying family time as a blessing. The key lies in simplicity, in living our faith naturally, without labels or pretensions. And at the end of summer, we’ll surely take away not only photos and memories… but also a slightly fuller heart.
