More than employees, a community: The Pope’s message on the dignity of work
Leo XIV receives the workers of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI) and proposes a management model based on humanity, collaboration, and mutual respect
In a meeting marked by warmth and pastoral depth, Pope Leo XIV addressed the employees of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), reminding them that no organization, not even the Church, should function like a cold, bureaucratic machine. His message, centered on the individual and the value of work as a vocation, transcends the boundaries of the institution to offer a universal reflection on workplace well-being.
Work as a fabric of relationships
For the Pope, the workplace is not simply a place for exchanging services for remuneration, but a living space where fraternity must prevail. Leo XIV insisted that employees are not mere cogs in a machine, but protagonists in a shared mission. In this regard, he urged those in charge to foster a climate of active listening and mutual support, where each individual feels valued for their unique contribution.
” The Church must be the first to bear witness that work is for the person and not the person for work, always promoting justice and tenderness in daily dealings,” the Holy Father pointed out.
Against the throwaway culture in employment
The Pope did not shy away from the modern challenges of human resource management. He made a direct appeal to avoid precarious employment and to ensure that Church structures reflect Gospel values in their contracts and labor relations. According to Leo XIV, consistency between what is preached from the pulpit and what is lived out in the offices is fundamental to the Church’s credibility in the contemporary world. One cannot speak of social justice if it is not first practiced “at home.”
A model of synodal collaboration
The speech also emphasized the need to “walk together.” Within the framework of the synodal process underway in the Church, the Pope suggested that this consultative, participatory, and transparent way of working should be the standard for the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI). Close collaboration between laity, priests, and bishops in their daily work is, in his words, a sign of a living Church that knows how to adapt to the times without losing its essence.
Finally, Leo XIV expressed his gratitude for the silent dedication of those who, behind the cameras and desks, support the work of the Episcopal Conference, reminding them that their effort is a direct service to the People of God and a concrete way of building a more just society.
