“Magnifica Humanitas,” the first encyclical, will be published on May 25
The Algorithm of the Soul: Leo XIV Challenges Artificial Intelligence in His First Encyclical
The Holy See Press Office has confirmed the details of what will be the first major magisterial document of Pope Leo XIV. Entitled “Magnifica Humanitas” ( Magnificent Humanity ), this encyclical letter has been formally signed by the Pontiff with the purpose of updating the Church’s Social Doctrine and establishing the foundations of its perspective on contemporary society.
Expectations are high, not only because of the depth of its contents, but also because of an unusual gesture: Leo XIV himself will participate in person in the public presentation of the document in Rome, an intervention that will conclude with his blessing and in which he will be accompanied by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State.
Protecting humanity from machines
The central theme of Magnifica Humanitas is perfectly defined in the official statement from the Press Office: the work deals with “the protection of the human person in the age of artificial intelligence . ” At a time of unprecedented technological expansion, the Pope reflects deeply on the impact and risks that AI poses to the essence of humanity, employment, and workers’ rights.
Leo XIV does not limit his analysis to technology. The encyclical is firmly rooted in current geopolitical reality by addressing ongoing global conflicts, the alarming crisis of international law, and other latent threats that jeopardize world peace.
A renewed tradition: from workers’ justice to the digital age
The choice of dates and the document’s background carry profound symbolic weight. The Pope seeks to situate his first encyclical within the Church’s great social tradition, connecting directly with the historic Rerum Novarum promulgated by Leo XIII in 1891—considered the cornerstone of Catholic Social Teaching that defended the dignity of workers during the Industrial Revolution—and with John Paul II’s Centesimus Annus in 1991, which analyzed the consequences of the fall of communism. Thus, Leo XIII takes up the mantle to interpret, from the perspective of faith and ethics, the most complex challenges of the 21st century.
A cry for the most vulnerable
Beyond algorithms and diplomacy, the text pulsates with a powerful social critique. The Pope uses these pages to raise his voice against economic inequality. “The poor are not poor by chance ,” he firmly emphasizes in the text, simultaneously condemning as “blindness and cruelty” the stance of those who think under that premise. Likewise, the Pope openly laments that, in today’s society, “the practice of charity is despised or ridiculed.”
With Magnifica Humanitas , Leo XIV consolidated a pontificate of global scope, ready to confront head-on the challenges of technological modernity and remind the world that progress is worthless if it forgets human dignity.
