“Many depend on your generosity to survive”
The Pope urges the Church of Cologne not to abandon persecuted Christians
On April 30, 2026, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Office for the Universal Church and Dialogue of the Archdiocese of Cologne, Pope Leo XIV received its members at the Vatican. In a direct and urgent message, he asked them to maintain and strengthen their commitment to Christians suffering persecution, war, and poverty in various parts of the world, especially in the Middle East.
The Archdiocese of Cologne has been supporting concrete aid projects for Christian communities in over one hundred countries for decades. Its work has focused on regions affected by conflict, famine, floods, and violence, with particular attention to the Eastern Churches. The Pope acknowledged that, for many of these communities, this assistance is not additional support, but a matter of survival.
“Many of our Christian brothers and sisters have been forced to leave their countries because of war, violence, and poverty, and many depend directly on your commitment and generosity for their survival. Therefore, I encourage you to persevere in this mission of charity,” the Pope told them.
Leo XIV emphasized that, through this generous service, “the universal dimension of the Church becomes visible and concrete,” promoting solidarity and strengthening the bonds of unity among the various Christian communities. He particularly stressed the importance of sustaining “the presence of Christians in the Middle East,” where their witness “is more necessary today than ever before.”
The message also had a deeper component concerning the nature of the Church. The Pope recalled that, in light of Christ’s Resurrection, the Church is sent to all peoples “not by imposing itself, but by bearing witness to the truth in charity.” In this sense, he valued dialogue as an instrument that strengthens communion, opens paths to understanding, and serves the cause of peace in a world marked by division and suffering.
The Cologne Office for the Universal Church and Dialogue is celebrating half a century of quiet but effective work, having become a concrete bridge of solidarity between the German Church and the most vulnerable communities on the planet. The meeting with the Pope not only served to commemorate this anniversary but also to renew a call for perseverance in a mission that, according to Leo XIV, makes tangible the closeness of the entire universal Church to those who suffer most.
A timely reminder in times when religious persecution and humanitarian crises are relentless: charity is not optional, but an essential part of Christian identity.
