“Let them grow together until the harvest”: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró

Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the  Gospel of Sunday, July 18, 2026,  entitled, “Let them grow together until the harvest.”

This Word invites us to  have a look of faith on all of life and also on the mystery of evil,  a mystery that surprises and disconcerts us; a mystery that is very close to us, because we all experience evil in the world; and we also experience it in our hearts.

That is why the Lord wants to give us a word so that we can look at this mystery from the perspective of faith and not live frightened, overwhelmed, or defeated by the mystery of evil.

On the one hand,  we have the wound of original sin,  which causes  us to live with  concupiscence,  a tendency in our hearts  that leads us to disorder . And a tendency means that if you do nothing, you will inevitably descend into disorder.

To keep your life from becoming disordered,  you have to do things; you have to live with the Lord,  you have to fight the battle of faith , you have to live the Christian life, and that makes us  have to  discern  to know that you cannot simply live letting yourself be carried away by the desires of your wounded heart, because sometimes you will let yourself be carried away by evil, and you will do what Saint Paul says:  I do the evil I do not want to do, and the good I want to do I often do not do  (cf.  Rom  7, 14).

And that is why this word is a  call to conversion , to the constant conversion of the heart. And  the first conversion is not to live simply letting ourselves be carried away by our desires or by the fashions of the world , but rather  we are called to  discern our desires and our appetites , to illuminate them with the light of the Word of God, and therefore each day when we live we must ask ourselves if what my heart desires is good, if it is what the Lord wants for me, if it is beneficial to me or not; or if, on the contrary, what appears in my heart is the weed that the evil one has sown in my heart.

In  your heart  the enemy sows  the weeds of pride , self-sufficiency, rebellion, disillusionment, complaining, bitterness… He wants to make you doubt God’s love, to make you believe that your plans and your criteria are better than God’s; he wants to make you believe that you know more than God, that you are the master of your life and your story, that you know better than anyone what is best for you…

In your  relationship with your siblings,  God sows the  seeds of envy , judgment, gossip, bitterness, and resentment. He wants to make you doubt that your brother is a  gift,  so that  you begin to see him as a  rival.  And in this way, he gradually renders you incapable of having a  merciful gaze,  of seeing him  as God sees him.

In your  relationship with your community,  it sows the  seeds of rivalry, self-importance, and division … It makes you forget that you have  received your charisms freely.  And you have received them not for your personal glory, but for the common good.  It leads you to seek  your own  community project , and that easily leads you to despise the poor, the weak, the sinner…

And we will live this struggle until the last day of our lives, so  be patient with yourselfDon’t be afraid or scandalized by your weakness . In your weakness, you must learn to live well. We are all poor and weak, and we are called to learn to live our weakness.

Our weakness should lead us to  humility , to live each day clinging to the Lord. Humility  should lead us to confess our sins , to ask the Lord for forgiveness, and to begin again as many times as necessary.

And, on the other hand,  this perspective of faith is also about the evil that exists in the world .

How do we fight evil?  Well, Saint Paul will tell us that too:  evil is fought with good.

With that gaze of faith, we will not live scandalized or intimidated, but clinging to Jesus Christ, having the certainty that with Him we have victory assured.

Furthermore, you  can live each day collaborating with the  sower of discord,  picking at the wounds of others, stirring up trouble, full of reasons!…  or you can live collaborating with the  comforting Spirit,  who comes to the aid of our weakness,  and makes you discover that God has given you hands not to  hurt , but to  heal and help ; a tongue, not to  curse , but to  praise and console ; a  heart , not to  hate , but to  love and forgive .

Come Holy Spirit!  (cf.  Lk  11:13).
