I am meek and humble of heart
Sunday, July 5, 2026
Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the Gospel of Sunday, July 5, 2026, entitled, “I am meek and humble of heart.”
Today in the Gospel, the Lord Jesus tells us words that always move us: “ Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest . Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light .”
Perhaps this is your situation today. Perhaps you are tired and overwhelmed by the difficulties of daily life : problems, weaknesses, misunderstandings, failures, sins, wounds, frustrations, illnesses, powerlessness, fears, resentments, sins… so many things that, if we do not allow them to be illuminated by Jesus Christ, eventually become a heavy burden.
And that’s why we sometimes say “I’m just getting by,” as if we were dragging life along, like a heavy burden we don’t enjoy, “I’m just surviving,” as if living were a punishment and we were half-dead. And that’s how we are so often, tired and overwhelmed.
If you’re experiencing any of this in your life today, don’t be afraid or shocked by yourself! It’s something we all go through. But it’s an experience the Lord wants to illuminate and heal. And that’s the key. That’s the good news the Lord wants to give you today. The Lord wants you to rest in Him.
And what does it mean to rest in the Lord? Well, it means, first of all, that you tell the Lord, that you don’t keep it bottled up in your heart, letting it eat away at you like a canker, slowly destroying you from within. No, prayer is talking to God, and talking to God is telling Him what’s in your heart , telling Him what’s happening to you, what you feel, what you’re going through, without fear. The Lord loves you and will never reject you. Tell Him what’s in your heart, express your feelings to Him, don’t hold back, cry to the Lord, pour out your heart to the Lord.
It is very important that our prayer be sincere , that we not try to please the Lord. No, God is your Father, a good Father who loves you. Open your heart to Him, tell Him what is in it, just as you are experiencing it. Don’t filter it, don’t try to fix it or embellish it, no. Let everything come out, let it all out, pray about it, rest it in the Lord, and then ask Him for the gift of the Holy Spirit so that He may help you see, to rest, to have light on your life, to purify what needs purifying in your life, to resolve what needs resolving in your life.
Living under Jesus’ yoke means this. A yoke is something that unites. Jesus’ yoke means living life with the Lord , not trying to live it alone, relying on your own strength. No, live it united to the Lord. And united to the Lord means: opening your heart to Him, expressing what’s in your heart, asking the Lord how to live through all these problems, crying out to the Lord, trusting in the Lord, but experiencing each day that you are not alone, that the Lord walks with you and that, in a mysterious way, in a way we cannot understand with our logic, the Lord, through the path of humility, leads us to glory.
The Lord has hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
And so the first reading from the prophet Zechariah also tells us. This reading will be fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the king who comes poor and riding on a donkey, on a colt. Thus Jesus will enter Jerusalem; the king of kings will conquer through the humiliation of the cross.
And that is also the path of our lives . We are called to discover that we ascend to heaven by descending the path of humility, by living our own poverty and discovering how humility is the humus , the good soil, in which the seed can be received and can bear abundant fruit.
Come Holy Spirit! (cf. _ Lk_ 11, 13).
