How to Enjoy Christmas?

Practical Tips for a Stress-Free and Grateful Christmas

How to Enjoy Christmas?

The Christmas holidays are synonymous with happiness for many, but also with nostalgia and stress for others.  It’s important to know how to avoid letting the negative aspects affect us and find ways to fully enjoy this time of year.  Christmas, full of special moments, is one of the most important celebrations in Spain. However, for some people, it can also be an emotional challenge.

A Feast of Contrasts

These days tend to be emotional, marked by family gatherings where absences are more noticeable and tensions can surface.  Despite the excitement surrounding Christmas, they are also days of stress and heightened emotions.  Marian Rojas Estapé, through her podcast Winning Minds, offers tips for reducing anxiety and cultivating calm and happiness.

“These holidays bring with them a host of expectations that aren’t always met, and when that happens, emotions like frustration, sadness, or even a feeling of failure can arise,” explains Rojas Estapé. She also emphasizes that  “happiness isn’t found in the decorations or the most expensive gift, but in how you choose to experience each moment.”

Keys to a more fulfilling Christmas

Although we associate these celebrations with moments of joy, Christmas also “triggers our memories, our expectations, and our emotional wounds.” To prevent these days from becoming a source of stress, the expert recommends:

  1. Live with calm and gratitude:  Genuinely connect with your emotions, relationships, and well-being.
  2. Prioritize what’s important:  Instead of worrying about what others expect, focus on what truly matters to you. “You don’t have to please everyone or everything. The key is to be honest with yourself.”
  3. Accept imperfection:  No family is perfect. If there are tensions, practice gratitude. You will find something to be thankful for, even in the midst of difficulties.
  4. Set boundaries:  Learn to say ‘no’ when necessary. You don’t have to impress anyone.

Tips for a More Peaceful Christmas

Planning your activities well can help you stay calm.  Some practical tips include:

  • Organization and planning:  Buy and prepare in advance to avoid last-minute rushes.
  • Delegate responsibilities:  Don’t try to do everything yourself; ask for help when you need it.
  • Take time for yourself:  Dedicate a few minutes each day to relax or reconnect with yourself.
  • Avoid conflicts:  If you fear tensions at family gatherings, sit next to people you get along with.

An Authentic and Simple Christmas

Christmas is an opportunity to connect with your emotions and with the people who truly matter in your life. Make it your own, keep it simple if that’s what you need, and above all, allow yourself to experience it without the chains of expectations,” concludes Rojas Estapé.

These holidays can be an opportunity to enjoy what truly matters:  connection, gratitude, and emotional well-being. Instead of striving for perfection, embrace the beauty of simplicity and the authenticity of shared moments.
