He will lease the vineyard to other tenants: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró
Sunday, October 4, 2026
Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the Gospel of Sunday, October 4, 2026, entitled, “He will lease the vineyard to other tenants.”
***
The Word of God that we proclaim today calls us earnestly to conversion, to bear fruit. We sang in the Alleluia: “ I have chosen you out of the world, that you should go and bear fruit .”
This will be the sign of welcoming God’s free love, this will be the sign of being open to the action of the Holy Spirit, the sign of welcoming God’s salvation.
We don’t earn salvation; we receive it as a free gift . Now, how can you tell if you’re truly accepting this gift? It’s in the way your life changes, in how salvation creates a new person within you, in how the love of God you’ve received transforms your life, and how its fruits begin to appear.
As a Church, as a parish, as a community, as a current of grace or as a movement… and also on a personal level, we must ask ourselves if we are bearing the fruits that the Lord expects from us.
Because we can fall into the trap of becoming owners of what has been given to us for administration .
And remember: you are not god; you are not the master, but the disciple; you are not the Lord, but the servant…
We are not owners , but servants of the Word we have received.
Nor are we owners of the charisms we have received freely. The Holy Spirit has not given you these charisms to hide, nor for your personal glory: He has given them to you so that, through you, He may build up the Church.
What fruits does the Lord expect us to bear?
That you build your life on the cornerstone, which is Christ, that you keep justice and righteousness: that is, that you live not according to the criteria of the world nor according to your heart wounded by sin, but that you let the Word of God give you the mind of Christ and try to do His will.
May you live in His people, which is the Church. God did not create you for solitude , but for relationship , communion , and self-giving . And He has called you to faith within a family, within a community. He has given you brothers and sisters so that we may share the faith and help one another on our journey toward the goal of heaven.
May you live with the confidence that God is faithful and the vineyard will not be destroyed, but also with the responsibility that, if we do not bear the expected fruit, if we appropriate what has been given to us, the owner of the vineyard will lease it to other tenants; for to him who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance…
The beginning of wisdom is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit: the fear of God. The fear that I might ruin—through my pride, not my weakness—the work the Lord is doing in me.
Come Holy Spirit! (cf. Lk 11:13).
