Goodbye to Spiritual Boredom! How to Make Routine a Joyful Path to God

Spiritual monotony? Not so fast!

We’ve all felt that praying the same thing over and over, attending Mass, or meditating every day can become… well, monotonous. It’s like eating spaghetti three days in a row: delicious at first, but then you think, “Again?”

The good news is that the spiritual life is not devoid of creativity: even in the most repetitive routine, God invites us to discover him in new and surprising ways.

Why does this happen to us?

Theologian Francisco Fernández Carvajal points out that monotony arises when we focus too much on the form and too little on the substance of our faith. In other words, we follow the “recipe” but forget to savor the food.

Pope Benedict XVI reminds us that the essence of holiness is love. If our spiritual life doesn’t feel alive, perhaps we need to rekindle that spark of love that gives meaning to every prayer, every action, every small daily gesture.

Strategies to add life to your routine

  1. Change your mindset:  Each repeated prayer isn’t a boring chore, it’s an encounter with God. Imagine that each Our Father or Hail Mary is a personal letter you write to your best friend.

  2. Do everything with love:  Saint Josemaría Escrivá said that doing everything out of love transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Even washing the dishes can be an opportunity to say, “I love you, Lord.”

  3. Find the extraordinary in the everyday:  Look around you: the song of a bird, the smile of a neighbor, the aroma of freshly baked bread. Everything can be a reminder of God’s presence.

  4. Share and have a laugh:  Telling someone about your spiritual life can be refreshing. Sometimes a lighthearted conversation with friends of faith renews our enthusiasm more than any serious lecture.

  5. Trust in grace:  Remember that you are not alone. God walks with you even when everything feels repetitive. Routine is not an obstacle; it is the ground where His grace can flourish.

Transforming routine into joy

Spiritual monotony can be your greatest ally in growth, if you approach it with fresh eyes. Pope John Paul II said that the spiritual life is a “school of prayer.” And every school needs practice, patience… and even moments of fun!

The next time you feel your spiritual life becoming repetitive, smile. Observe, give thanks, and offer your routine to God. With a little creativity and a lot of love, routine can become a daily adventure toward holiness and joy.
