The Word that the Lord gives us today invites us to live by faith, and to live in faith, trusting in the faithfulness of God, which is the foundation of our hope. His word is alive and effective.
Faith is not a theory that is learned, but rather having discovered that God loves you, created you out of love, cares for you, and invites you to live a life of friendship with Him, a personal relationship with Him. A relationship that is not for a time, but for all eternity: because no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no human being conceived what God has prepared for those who love him (cf. 1 Cor 2:9).
And in that relationship, the underlying attitude is trust. Living in faith is trusting in the Lord, trusting in His Word, trusting in the history He is making with you. Even if you don’t understand many things, you can say with the psalmist: Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear nothing, for you are with me… My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth… The Lord watches over you as you come in and go out, both now and forever.
Your whole life is a constant response to this call. This is the conversion to which the Lord calls you every day: to follow Jesus Christ or to follow yourself. This is faith.
And this life is a battle, because the devil, like a roaring lion, prowls around looking for someone to devour (cf. 1 Pet 5:10).
In our weakness, we easily become anxious and overwhelmed. Sometimes by the present, because we are disconcerted and overwhelmed by the mystery of evil, so present before our eyes; other times by the future, which we cannot control and which makes our smallness evident.
In the midst of this struggle (cf. 1 Tim 6:12), the Lord tells us that it is necessary to pray always, without fainting.
He who prays is never completely alone… When no one hears me anymore, God still hears me. When I can no longer speak to anyone, nor invoke anyone, I can always speak to God (cf. Spe Salvi 34).
And pray with confidence and perseverance, with the certainty that God hears you, asking confidently for what you need, but especially, asking for the Holy Spirit (cf. Lk 11:13).
The Holy Spirit is the one who, with his gifts, gives you the power to live today as a time of grace, of salvation. He gives you the power to savor your concrete life, because he makes you live in love with Jesus Christ, who makes your life new and makes you experience salvation there.
And the same Spirit gives you the power to trust, to rest, to not fear the future, because He seals in your heart the certainty that God loves you, is faithful, and there is nothing and no one who can separate you from the love of God manifested in Christ Jesus.
Pray! Open your heart to the Lord and give Him everything in it: joys, sorrows, burdens, fears, sins, hang-ups, wounds, plans, worries, failures… Don’t be afraid! Be sincere with the Lord! No one loves you like He does. He will never stop loving you. He wants you to have life, and life in abundance.
Pray! Open your ears. Let the Lord speak to you. His word judges the desires and intentions of the heart. It is always a word of love, of life, of salvation… Allow yourself to be enlightened by Him! His word is useful for teaching, for arguing, for correcting, for educating in justice… It is a Word that can give you the wisdom that leads to salvation.
Pray! Open your lips to praise, to give thanks, to bless, to let the echo of the Spirit come out of your mouth, whispering in your heart that you are God’s beloved child, his chosen one.
Come, Holy Spirit!
