God Doesn’t Work on Television: Why Real Miracles Aren’t Sold in Stadiums

Demystifying the Faith of Spectacle and Where True Divine Interventions Are Hidden

God Doesn’t Work on Television: Why Real Miracles Aren’t Sold in Stadiums

There’s a multi-million dollar industry built on human desperation. We’ve all seen those late-night TV shows or those packed stadiums where a self-proclaimed healer lays hands on someone, shouts, and magically, someone who came in a wheelchair comes running out. It’s quite a spectacle. The problem is, most of the time,  it’s a scam . I once met someone who worked on one of those shows; they confessed to me that they were paid a good sum of money simply for limping in and walking out.

This is what I call  “cheap miracles .” And the first great truth we must understand is that God doesn’t put on shows, nor does He work for television.

Real miracles exist (but they’re not a magic trick)

Of course miracles exist. I have been blessed to lead pilgrimages to Eucharistic miracles in Lanciano, Siena, and Orvieto, where consecrated hosts have turned into flesh and wine into human blood. Saint Carlo Acutis himself dedicated his short life to investigating and cataloging more than one hundred of these phenomena.

Medical miracles also exist. We all know stories of terminally ill patients who were given three months to live due to terminal cancer and who, some time later, leave doctors speechless:  “It’s as if you never had anything . “

However, the mistake today is seeking God solely through spectacle or, worse still, resorting to witchcraft, having tarot cards read, undergoing egg cleansing rituals, or falling into the clutches of manipulative cults. That’s not faith; it’s superstition.

The healing that doesn’t make the news

The greatest miracles I have witnessed in my priestly life have nothing to do with legs growing longer or tumors dissolving. They have to do with the soul. They are  inner healings .

I have seen marriages destroyed, where love had completely died, where they no longer felt anything, regain hope and meaning in their lives after finding refuge in prayer. I have seen people forgive adultery—which is easy to say, but incredibly difficult. I have seen brothers forgive the theft of the factory they had built with so much effort.

These are not cheap miracles that happen in five minutes after someone shouts into a microphone. They are the mature fruit of prayer, therapy, adoration, the Eucharist, and the sacraments.

The danger of wanting God to do  our  will

There is a second uncomfortable but necessary lesson:  God does not do our will, we must accept His.

The  Lord’s Prayer  is very clear:  “Thy will be done .” If we prayed for our own will to be done on earth, there would be no sickness, no death, all marriages would be perfect, and all women could have children. But humankind does not have the complete perspective of the universe.

My own father died of cancer when I was young. There were six of us siblings praying for him, and God took him at 42. Does that mean God didn’t hear us? No. It means that the One who is wiser and greater than I knew what was best for his soul.

Sometimes we are horrified by physical suffering, cancer, or illness. But for God, the body is temporary; the soul is eternal. Often, illness is the ground where a person matures, grows in faith, sheds vanity, and learns to place their entire life in the hands of the Creator. It is infinitely more beautiful to have immense faith and love than to have a perfect body or 100% health but an empty soul. God, who is Father, knows this.

The secret of true miracles

If you’re seeking divine intervention in your life, forget quick fixes and emotional displays. The secret to true miracles isn’t a mystery; it’s a way of life.

  • Repentance and conversion.
  • Constant prayer and worship.
  • The Eucharist and the Sacraments.
  • Ask with all your heart, but with humility.

Before you ask for help with your knee, your back pain, or your financial situation—things God already knows you need—do as King Solomon did:  ask for wisdom . Ask for faith, hope, and love. Ask for the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the ability to serve others.

God performs countless miracles every day, but He doesn’t do them through shouts or magic. He does them in the silence of your prayer, in the intimacy of the sacraments, and through your patience and faith.
