Faith: Light to See with God’s Eyes
Theological Virtues: What is Faith?
Faith is the first of the theological virtues. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 1814):
“Faith is the theological virtue by which we believe in God and in all that He has told us and revealed to us, and that the Holy Church proposes to us, because God is Truth itself.”
That is to say, belief is not a simple religious sentiment or naive optimism, but rather trusting in the Word of God as in a solid rock.
Saint John Paul II summed it up this way:
“Faith is not just accepting a doctrine, but entrusting oneself to a Person: Christ” (Catechesis, 1985).
How to live the Faith today
In a world that often doubts the spiritual, living the faith involves:
- Pray with confidence even if we don’t see immediate results.
- Educate yourself : read the Bible, the Catechism, and the writings of saints. Faith is nourished by knowledge.
- Bearing witness with coherence in everyday life: honest work, respect for all, contagious joy.
- Participate in the life of the Church : sacraments, community, service.
Pope Francis remembers:
“Faith is not a refuge for the courageless, but the expansion of life. It leads us to discover a great calling: the vocation to love” (Evangelii Gaudium, 53).
Practical tips for growing in faith
- A moment of daily prayer (even if it is brief).
- Prayerful reading of the Gospel at least once a week.
- An act of faith in moments of darkness : repeating “Jesus, I trust in You.”
- Join a group or community where people talk about God and live their faith together.
Examination of conscience on the Faith
- Do I trust God even when I don’t understand his ways?
- Do I nourish my faith with the Word and prayer, or do I let it fade?
- Am I consistent with what I believe in my decisions?
- Do I share my faith with simplicity, or hide it out of shame?
A final key
Faith is not a treasure kept in a drawer, but a light to be shared. As Benedict XVI said:
“Faith grows when it is shared” (Porta Fidei, 7)
