Christ Is Life: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró

Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the  Gospel for Sunday, March 22  , 2026, entitled, “Christ is Life”

For the  past three Sundays,  we have heard the Gospel readings from the baptismal catechesis of the early Church. They are  the answer to three great questions of humanity:  dissatisfactiondarkness  , and  death . Faced with these  three great questions  that concern people throughout history,  the Word of God comes to give us the answerJesus Christ  is  the  source of living water  capable of quenching our thirst,  Jesus Christ is  the light of the world , and  Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life .

The gospel of the resurrection of Lazarus is an important message that the Lord wants to give to each of us:  to help us discover where life is.

Because many times we are alive but not truly living. And we express this a lot in everyday language. Sometimes,  to the question “How are you?”,  we answer by saying,  “I’m getting by.”  And when someone “gets by,” what does that mean? Well, it means they are dragging a burden, and that’s why they are pulling on the load. And life often becomes like that for us, a heavy burden that we struggle to carry.

Sometimes we say  we’re “living in survival mode.”  But someone who is surviving is someone who is fighting with death, and sometimes it seems like death wins and sometimes it seems like life wins. It means they are there, in a very serious, very intense battle.

And Jesus tells us today, I did not create you to live in survival mode, nor did I create you to just get by:  I have come  – Jesus says –  so that you may have life and have it abundantly  (cf.  Jn  10:10). But you cannot give yourself that life.

When we try to live without God, we ultimately die, because our life depends on God. You did not give yourself life.

Thus, we too  , like Lazarus, often live as if dead, locked in the tomb , and we often smell foul. Not physically foul, but in another way that we can also perceive; we live with chronic dissatisfaction, entrenched in constant complaint, without hope… We live bringing forth what is in our hearts, which is death.

Let Jesus Christ enter your tomb today and say to you : Lazarus, come out, Mary, come out, George, come out… let Jesus enter today into that tomb where you are half dead, let his Holy Spirit enter and make everything new.

Let the Lord bring you out of death so that you can live a new life.

That is what Jesus Christ wants to give you: a new life, eternal life. And eternal life is not just life after death. It’s not just eighty or one hundred years of life. God loves you so much that He couldn’t have created you for such a short time:  the life to which God calls you has no end; it is  eternal life .

In the Gospel, we see  Jesus  arriving  at the  home of Martha  and Mary after the death of Lazarus. In this encounter,  Jesus says:  “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.”  Then he asked,  “Do you believe this?”

A question Jesus  poses to each of us today. He also  poses it   to you  today : Do you believe this?

To answer this question well,  you need the Holy SpiritAsk for it!  So that you, like Martha, can answer:  Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who was to come into the world .

And you too,  if you believe, will see the glory of God!

You will see the words of Ezekiel fulfilled in your life“I myself  will open your graves and bring you up from them, my people…  I will put my Spirit in you and you will live ” For  with the Lord comes mercy, abundant redemption.

Saint Paul also  told usif the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,  he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through the same Spirit who dwells in you.

So that , in the midst of your doubts, your darkness…  you may take the leap of faith , believe that Jesus Christ lives; that only He has the words of eternal life;  believe that He loves you  so much that He wants you to have life in abundance  and invites you to live  forever ,  beyond death, in heaven; for  no eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor can anyone imagine what God has prepared for those who love Him  (cf.  1 Cor  2:9). May  you confess that He is Lord of your life .

But, moreover,  we begin to taste eternal life here and nowThe Lord wants to bring you out of the tomb, out of your existential death . If you let Jesus Christ in and proclaim Him Lord of your life, you will see the glory of God.

Come, Holy Spirit!
