Blessed are the poor in spirit: A commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró

Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the  Gospel of Sunday, February 1, 2026  entitled, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.

***

In being Christian, everything is  a gift  from the Lord, who loves you; everything is  grace  that precedes humanity; everything is a work that the Lord, through the gift of the Holy Spirit, must accomplish in you. And which you must accept. It may seem like little, but it is not.

It is recognizing that everything you have and everything you are has been freely given, and that the true protagonist is not you, but the Lord. It is recognizing that God’s method is  humility : to reach heaven is  by descending .

The Kingdom of God belongs to the poor, the humble, those who are like children. The prophet Zephaniah showed us this: “  I will leave you a remnant, a humble and poor people who will seek refuge in the name of the Lord.”  And Saint Paul also said: “  God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong… so that no one may boast before the Lord.”

And in today’s Gospel we hear the Beatitudes, which, as Benedict XVI said, are like an “ultrasound” of the heart of Jesus. That is what the heart of Jesus is like. They are like a veiled inner biography of Jesus, like a portrait of his person.

And so will your heart be if you let the Holy Spirit mold it.

If faith is authentic, it transforms life, it bears  fruit . Works are not the cause of salvation, but the consequence of having accepted the free gift of salvation.

He who has received salvation, and has the Holy Spirit in his heart, sees how the works of the old man disappear and how the fruits of the Spirit appear – as a gift -: charity, joy, peace, patience, long-suffering, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, continence, chastity (cf.  Gal  5,  Catechism , 1832).

And, open to the action of the Holy Spirit, you will grow in faithfulness to the Lord. To the extent that you open yourself to the action of the Spirit, you will not be able to live for yourself; you will find happiness in living for the Lord and for your brothers and sisters. You will experience that  it is happier to give than to receive  (cf.  Acts  20:35).

And you will also grow in  trust in God.  For you will have sealed in your heart the certainty that God loves you and cares for you; the certainty that  the Lord maintains his faithfulness forever, he does justice to the oppressed… he sustains the orphan and the widow… he sets the captives free…

Take heart! Open your heart to the Lord and let Him work! Only He has the words of eternal life.

Come, Holy Spirit!
