Being a mother is a plus

The invisible value

Being a mother is a plus

A job interview. A strong resume. Extensive training. Professional merit. Sufficient experience. But the candidate has been out of the workforce for too long, because for several years she dedicated herself to her children. According to the interviewers, the position she’s applying for requires something extra that she lacks. It’s a shame: during those years she devoted to her children, she neglected herself and her own professional development.

It seems the candidate is giving up: raising her children has left a gap in her resume, an empty space where she can’t list the company she worked for or the position she held during that time. She has to accept it: being a mother has weakened her resume. But she’s not giving up and is rewriting it.

She discovers that the opposite has happened, that being a mother is a bonus and has given her experience and knowledge she didn’t have before. Being a mother has brought out the best in her, has allowed her to discover all the potential that human beings possess, and has made her grow with each child. Because being a mother should be the first qualification on one’s life resume, as it bestows an added value that can be summarized in these qualities:

  • Ability to take risks: because what gives meaning to life are projects, even if they are risky, and having a child is a risky project.
  • Capacity for effort and sacrifice: because being a mother involves many sleepless nights, many sacrifices, and a lot of dedication.
  • Communication and public speaking: because only a mother knows what to say, how and when to say it.
  • Resource management: because no one knows better than a mother how to do more with less and get the most out of what you have.
  • Motivational capacity: because only a mother’s love knows how to bring out the best in each child.
  • Organization and planning: because leading a family is the most important leadership role.
  • Perseverance and constancy: because a mother can never throw in the towel, a mother does not give up, a mother is always there.
  • Teamwork and leadership: because a family is a team in which each member is important for who they are, not for what they do.

These ideas are taken from an advertisement by  Hirukide , the Federation of Large Families of the Basque Country, which aims to be a “tribute to all mothers, because their time, dedication, affection and selflessness are qualities that we must value in all areas of our society.”

Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers every day.
