You are the light of the world: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró
Sunday, February 8, 2026
Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the Gospel of Sunday, February 8, 2026 entitled, “You are the light of the world.”
***
The Gospel invites us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world . What does the Lord mean by this? He tells us at the end of the Gospel: “ Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in you.”
It is not so much about explaining what light is, as about being light, and not with arrogance, but with humility; not falling into self-sufficient vanity, but always seeking the glory of God.
How can you be the light of the world today, of your world? By following Jesus Christ. We sang it in the Alleluia: “ I am the light of the world,” says the Lord; “whoever follows me will have the light of life .” And also in the Psalm: “The righteous shine in the darkness like a light.” And the first reading: “ When you remove from your midst oppression, the pointing finger, and slander, when you offer to the hungry of your bounty and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light will shine in the darkness.”
To the extent that you welcome Jesus Christ into your life; to the extent that you let him be the Lord of your life, of your whole life, your life will be illuminated by the Lord and thus become a light for others.
And then that lamp—your life—will be placed on the lampstand and will give light to everyone in the house. What is that lampstand?
Saint Augustine says that this lampstand is the cross, your cross. That cross which today continues to be a scandal and folly for many (cf. 1 Cor 1), but which is the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men.
And so your life, through the power of the Spirit, becomes salt.
Salt that gives meaning to your life, because you can see God’s love in the midst of everyday life; and you can rest in the fact that God loves you, is faithful and keeps his promises; that he is making a story of love and salvation with you and, therefore, we know that for those who love God all things work together for good (cf. Rom 8, 28).
Salt that adds flavor to the “routine” of your daily life, because you experience the presence of the risen Jesus Christ who, through the gift of his Spirit, makes your life new. And so you can live not in complaint but in blessing , not in murmuring but in praise , not in resentment but in gratitude .
Salt that heals, cares, because it makes present the Lordship of Jesus Christ, the Savior; it announces the good news of the Gospel and invokes the Holy Spirit that renews everything.
We are called to live a life different from others because we embody the values of the Kingdom of God, because we are in the world, but not because we base our lives not on human wisdom, but on the strength of the mystery of the cross.
Come, Holy Spirit!
