World Day of Peace 2026: For a peace that disarms and transforms

Pope Leo XIV calls us to abandon the logic of conflict and promote an active peace, based on love, justice, and the building of strong institutions at the local level

World Day of Peace 2026: For a peace that disarms and transforms

Since his first address to the world, Pope Leo XIV has made peace a central message of his pontificate. He now reaffirms this with the theme for the 2026 World Day of Peace: a peace that is “unarmed and disarming.”

The Pope encourages humanity to reject violence and to strive for authentic peace, not merely understood as the absence of conflict, but rooted in love and justice. This peace is not based on fear, but on the trust, reconciliation, and hope that are born when the weapons fall silent.

It’s not just an idea, but a way of life that rejects all forms of violence—including structural violence—and opens paths of understanding. Empathy, forgiveness, and the ability to reach out to others become pillars of this culture of peace.

“Peace be with you,” the Pope affirms. His message is addressed to all: believers and non-believers, political leaders and ordinary citizens, with the desire to build together a peaceful and truly human future.

The Pontiff recognizes that the world is marked by inequality, environmental degradation, and growing spiritual disconnection. Reconciliation begins by recognizing these wounds and addressing them from the concrete reality of each community. Only then will be healing be possible.

Far from the old principle of “if you want peace, prepare for war,” the Pope proposes a new horizon: “if you want peace, prepare institutions for peace.” This change can only come from below, with real dialogue and active participation.

In his catecheses, the Pope firmly reminds us that “without forgiveness, there will never be peace.” Forgiveness does not mean forgetting, but rather opening paths of healing that allow us to overcome divisions and advance toward authentic brotherhood.

Youth also plays an essential role in this journey. During the Jubilee Vigil at Tor Vergata, Leo XIV encouraged young people to be living witnesses of justice and reconciliation. Friendship, he emphasized, has the power to truly change the world.

Pope Leo XIV’s message for the 2026 World Day of Peace is an invitation to disarm our hearts, to build institutions of peace, and to embrace forgiveness as the basis of all reconciliation. With the strength of youth and friendship, the Church proposes a path to transform history in the spirit of hope and fraternity.
