Woke Culture or Cancel Culture

Origin, characteristics, and debate on wokism: between identity politics, political correctness, and freedom of expression

Woke Culture or Cancel Culture

Although more and more articles are being published about   woke culture , the term still lacks meaning for many people. This culture began in universities in the United States, but its influence has spread to all areas of society. In the US, this culture has two main “spearheads”: racism and gender ideology, and to combat it, an anti-woke university has been established in Austin, Texas   .

Richard M. Reinsch ‘s observations   on this culture  from the  Heritage Foundation in the US are very enlightening: “Woke culture is centered on   identity politics   and seeks to dissolve Western tradition and culture, especially Christian culture, by employing fear, intimidation, threats of dismissal, shouting, or social and professional isolation .” This is why it is said that “wokism” exists wherever there is identity politics; that is, wherever there is a group of people who feel oppressed and identify with the oppressor’s cause, which they defend in the name of a controversial social justice.

Woke ideology   is   a tribal movement because it divides society into groups, tribes, and transforms society into a realm of oppressed and oppressors: man/woman, heterosexual/homosexual, white/black, etc. Woke individuals  live detached from reality ; for them, the important thing is to be offended/oppressed, and forgiveness is not an option. (…) Being   a victim   allows them to judge the world and demand accountability from those responsible who deserve to be punished. Several authors point out that woke ideology has replaced the   class struggle   with the struggle for identities, which is why most woke individuals are left-leaning, as noted by several politicians from countries with past or present totalitarian regimes at the CEU-CEFAS International Congress on Victims of Communism held last April.

The woke movement has its own   principles , which constitute a closed system of thought, with which it attempts to explain the entirety of the universe. For them   , truth does not exist ; they shy away from debate, demand acceptance of their postulates, and boycott freedom of expression and liberal democracies because they are seen as contrary to minority or historically marginalized identities.

Furthermore, woke culture is considered to   be the   uncritical submission to political correctness   , and as a consequence, anyone who does not accept its paradigms is canceled and considered guilty. Hence, woke culture is also known as   cancel culture ; in it, there is no room for forgiveness of the transgressor.

Another characteristic feature  is that they intend   to completely re-educate the population   according to their postulates, whose objective is to achieve a single way of thinking, through the pedagogical use of fear and betting on diversity, inclusion and equality, called by J. Peterson as the “Trinity of the radical left”.

According to historian Pablo Pérez, behind Wokism lies   Marxist thought   and the idea that to create a new, supposedly better, society, the old one must be destroyed and demolished. According to Canadian sociologist Bock-Coté and writer J. Marcelo Gullo, it is a mistake to renounce our cultural and historical identity in favor of multicultural diversity. In seeking to eliminate Western civilization, they dare to erase great figures, such as Fray Junípero Serra, and distort moments of Western civilization with a Christian foundation, such as the conquest of Latin America.

The woke movement attempts to influence   legislative bodies   to pass laws that favor its cause, thus transforming a state that protects fundamental rights into a state of laws based on its myths, for example: the “only yes means yes” law, animal welfare laws, trans laws, (…). These laws do not conform to social reality, the common good, or natural morality, (…) but rather exacerbate inequality and promote the deconstruction of the individual.

One of the strategies used by the woke movement is   intimidation tactics   (canceling, shaming, humiliating, harassing, boycotting, demonizing) to subdue those who disagree with their tenets and thus achieve political victories. It’s surprising to learn that one can be targeted by a woke individual without even protesting, which has led to American universities and companies requiring re-education courses for students or employees considered anti-woke. For example, a white person, simply by virtue of being white, can be considered racist, since ” white guilt ” is inherited and unforgivable, and “white silence is a form of violence.”

Furthermore, it can be said that the woke hide under the   guise of tolerance and dialogue ; that is, in the beginning they appear tolerant and open to dialogue, but these ways of proceeding disappear when they reach levels of power.

They are highly skilled at   manipulating language , which severs our connection to reality and forces us to evolve according to their dictates, thus shaping our minds. This strategy is reinforced by the use of powerful slogans to saturate our minds.

Currently, there are   people who have been “canceled” for stating that there are two sexes , some even losing their jobs, as happened to Professor Jordan Peterson of the University of Toronto, who founded his own university, Peterson Academy, and had to resort to the courts. Something similar has happened to Professor Jesús Barrón in Alcalá de Henares and Professor Enoch Burke in Ireland. Cancellation also affects the curricula of some subjects in the Organic Law amending the Organic Law of Education (LOMLOE), which removes authors or essential parts of Western culture. Furthermore, Shakespeare’s operas Othello and The Merchant of Venice were re-performed at the Sydney Opera House because the former was considered racist, and the latter anti-Semitic.

The important thing is knowing   how to confront this culture . Many experts point to the following as a first step, but also other measures: avoiding self-censorship, reclaiming our culture, reclaiming the uniqueness and dignity of the human person, respecting life, refusing to allow our minds to be colonized, and recovering natural morality, (…). The loss of natural morality leads us to not know where good and evil lie, which makes us   malleable , (…), and prevents us from being truly free and having a fulfilling life.
