What You Have Stored, Whose Will It Be?: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró
Sunday, August 3, 2025
Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the Gospel for this Sunday, August 3, 2025, entitled “What you have accumulated, whose will it be?”

Vanity of vanities! All is vanity! Thus begins today’s first reading. When faith weakens, idols begin to appear.
And today the Word, which, as always, invites us to conversion, wishes to draw our attention to the idolatry of worldliness, of which Pope Leo recently warned us: to achieve a good end, the means must be good; but in this area, temptation can easily present itself under the appearance of good, as an illusion of being able to achieve the good ends proposed to us by means that might later prove inconsistent with God’s will. Jesus, too, was tempted in this, when the evil one “showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory” (Mt 4:8) and promised to give them to him if he worshipped him. But then Jesus would no longer have been the suffering Servant of God, who in humility strips himself of all worldly power to win, with love, the love of man. Jesus reaffirms, even in this particularly subtle temptation, the supremacy of God and does not sell himself to the power of this world. If Jesus had consented to the temptation, he would have adopted illicit means and would not have achieved the end established by the Father for his mission (24-VI-2025).
This is what the Word reminds us of today: If you have been raised with Christ, seek what is above … not what is on earth… Therefore, put to death whatever is earthly in you.
Beware of all kinds of greed, because the love of money is the root of all evil (cf. 1 Tim 6:10).
For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be. The goal of your life is not to earn money, but to reach heaven. It is of no use to someone if they gain the whole world and lose their soul… (cf. Mt 16:26).
Today, God’s Word invites you to take a deep look at your life to discover where your heart is. It invites you to review your scale of values and put them in their proper place, knowing that, although material things are necessary, they can never be the center of your life or your sole concern: money must be used, but it must not be loved.
We must use it, because we need material things to live. But man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Mt 4:4). Therefore, we must not love it. To love money would be to fall into idolatry: you would be asking for life from someone who cannot give it to you.
Only God is God! Only God is enough! Your heart is not a “piggy bank” or a “safe” that can be filled with money or material things… Your heart is so big that only God can fill it completely!
It’s a Word that invites you to trust in God, who is your Father, who loves you and cares for you. God provides! Ask Him for what you need, and rest!
What you have accumulated, whose will it be? God will not ask you for your bank books, nor the title deeds to your possessions, nor your school diplomas, nor your trophies and medals, nor human applause… The only thing the Lord will ask of you, the thing that will make you truly happy, the only wealth that no one can take away from you, is your fidelity to Him, and you’re passing through the world doing good. Where is your heart? Where are you placing your security? What do you aspire to in your life?
Come, Holy Spirit!
