Cardinal Felipe Arizmendi has expressed his deep sorrow following the murder of Fr. Marcelo Pérez, an indigenous priest of the diocese of San Cristóbal de las Casas. The tragic event occurred on Sunday morning in the Cuxtitali neighborhood, just after the priest celebrated Mass. The Cardinal, who ordained Fr. Marcelo, as a priest, will attend his funeral on Monday, with a saddened heart at the loss of a man committed to justice and peace among indigenous peoples.

A Committed Priest

Fr. Marcelo Pérez was one of the first Indigenous priests ordained in this diocese. He dedicated his life to serving his community, especially in Simojovel and Pantelhó, where he accompanied victims of internal violence.
