“True joy is born of encounter”: Leo XIV encourages young people on the eve of the Jubilee
In the hours before the great Jubilee vigil, Pope Leo XIV addresses the young people of the world with strength, tenderness, and hope. He invites them to experience authentic joy, prays for a deceased pilgrim, and encourages artists to help them find meaning and truth
On the eve of the eagerly awaited Jubilee Vigil with young people, which will take place tonight in Rome’s Tor Vergata park, Pope Leo XIV delivered several messages that resonate particularly strongly among pilgrims from all continents.
Addressing young people directly, the Pope reminded them that true joy “is not a passing high or a momentary distraction,” but rather “a fullness born from the encounter with Jesus, with others, and with oneself.” He encouraged them not to fear commitment or lofty ideals: “Take a risk for what is worthwhile, do not settle for a half-hearted life.”
The Holy Father also publicly expressed his sorrow for the death of Nadine Bishai, a young Egyptian pilgrim who died suddenly during her stay in Rome. “I join in the grief of her parents and family,” the Pope stated, “and I ask that we all pray for her. We offer this unexpected cross as a seed of hope.”
In another message addressed to the artists and musicians who will participate in tonight’s vigil, Leo XIV exhorted them not to remain superficial: “Do not merely entertain; help young people find the truth, to touch with their fingers the mystery of God.” He encouraged them to use their talent as a bridge to the beauty and profound meaning of life.
Tonight’s Jubilee Vigil is expected to be a moment of great spiritual intensity, fraternal encounter, and inner renewal. The Pope has sown words that, like seeds, promise to blossom in many young hearts.
