The Tree That Changed History: Why the Cross Is Not an End, But a Spring
From Instrument of Torment to Throne of Glory: The Mystery of True Freedom
In the liturgical calendar and in the traditions of various countries, May 3rd is tinged with a victorious red. While the world is distracted by the ephemeral, the Church invites us to lift our gaze to the Holy Cross . Not as one who observes an archaeological object or a symbol of passive resignation, but as one who contemplates the ” Scandal of Hope .”
1. The Discovery of Truth (The Invention of the Cross)
Historically, this date commemorates the discovery of the relics of the Cross by Saint Helena in Jerusalem around the year 326. But beyond the historical fact, theological analysis reveals a divine pedagogy: what was buried and forgotten under the rubble of the world—sacrifice, surrender, and radical love—is, in reality, the foundation of the new architecture of the soul.
“We preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, the power of God and the wisdom of God.” — 1 Corinthians 1:23-24
2. The Cross as Axis of the World (Stat Crux dum volvitur orbis)
While the world turns and constantly changes, the Cross remains steadfast. It is the point of equilibrium where justice and mercy meet.
- Verticality : The reconnection between heaven and earth.
- Horizontality : The infinite embrace of all humanity, without exclusions.
From a constructive perspective, the Holy Cross teaches us that suffering is not a dead end . In the Catholic worldview, suffering united with that of Christ is transformed into a tool of redemption. Pain is not celebrated for its own sake, but rather the victory of Love over death that occurred on that cross.
3. A Pedagogy for Daily Life
Celebrating the Holy Cross today, May 3rd, involves an exercise in personal analysis:
- Transforming the “Log” into a “Bridge”: How can I turn my difficulties into opportunities to serve others?
- The Joy of Surrender : The Cross is the greatest “Yes” in history. It tells us that human fulfillment is not achieved by possessing, but by giving of oneself.
- Identity and Pride : Wearing the cross (on the chest or in the heart) is not an amulet, it is a commitment to live with the coherence of one who knows he has been rescued.
The Tree of Life
In Genesis, a tree brought the fall; on Calvary, a tree brought redemption. The Holy Cross is the new Tree of Life whose fruits are peace, strength, and the certainty that the grave never has the last word.
Today, when you see a cross, don’t see an end. See the trophy of a God who chose to die rather than lose us. Happy Feast of the Holy Cross!
