The Sower Went Out to Sow: Commentary by Fr. Jorge Miró
Sunday, July 12, 2026
Fr. Jorge Miró shares with Exaudi readers his commentary on the Gospel of Sunday, July 12, 2026, entitled, “The sower went out to sow.”
The Lord invites us to open our hearts and receive the seed of his Word , a Word that is always a Word of love and salvation that the Lord has for you.
But we sometimes, because of the wound of original sin, live as the prophet Isaiah prophesied: this people hear with their ears but do not listen, they look but do not see because their hearts are dull, they are in other things, they are hard of hearing, they have closed their eyes and thus they cannot live .
That is why the Church invites us every day to begin our morning prayer with the invitatory psalm: If only you would listen to his voice today: do not harden your hearts , for the Lord is going to do in you the work of the new creation, as he did in the first creation, through the Word.
The Word of God has power and is fulfilled when it is received. And in you, the Lord will work the new creation in the same way, through the Word. If you receive the Word of God, this Word will be fulfilled in your life.
And you will see how a new creature appears within you , life in the Spirit appears, making your whole life new. And that is the conversion to which the Lord calls us today.
The Lord planted this seed in you on the day of your baptism . And the seed has all the power within itself to grow, like any seed. Welcome it and let it grow. Strive to make your heart the good soil that receives the seed.
The gospel has given us some criteria to discover what makes the earth good , not so good, or bad.
If we plant a seed here in the marble, it’s clear what will happen. Marble is very beautiful, but it’s not good soil for any seed to grow in, and it can’t. Sometimes our lives can be the same. They can be a very beautiful facade of marble, of precious but hard stones, so hard that they are incapable of receiving the seed, and that’s why there is no life within us.
What has the Lord told us?
First, it says that sometimes the evil one comes and steals the seed. Sometimes the evil one steals the word from us. How? By distracting us, by making us think about other things… Also, when we judge the one who proclaims the word, or the one who preaches, perhaps because we know their weaknesses… Don’t let the evil one deceive you by judging the messenger and rejecting the message.
Also because of our judgment of the Word : “Blessed is the one who is not offended by me ,” Jesus will say at the beginning of his preaching. Sometimes we may hear the word and find it so difficult to live by that we immediately judge and reject it.
If the Word seems difficult to fulfill, perhaps because it is calling you to a very deep conversion, do not reject it , trust in the Lord and ask Him for the Holy Spirit , say to Him: Lord, give me the Holy Spirit so that I may live this word, as Saint Augustine said, give me what you ask of me and ask of me what you want .
There is also the rocky ground , which chokes the Word. It is the one who hears the Word and hears it with joy, but as soon as difficulties and problems arise, he falls away.
We all face difficulties and problems, sometimes significant ones. But it is precisely then that we must cling to the Lord most , ask Him for light, and ask Him for the Holy Spirit so that we may trust, so that we may rest, so that we may contemplate the work that the Lord wants to do in us.
The worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth also choke the Word . When we set our hearts on idols and stop trusting in the Lord, the Word is extinguished, choked out, and we too begin to die.
On the other hand, the one who lives on good soil is the one who hears the word and accepts it with confidence; this is the one who bears much fruit .
Come Holy Spirit! (cf. Lk 11:13).
