The Sacred Rite of Confirmation
Grandfather's Catechesis: A moment of grace where the Spirit descends, inviting us to love Jesus with a new fire in our hearts
Gather around, dear children, so that this grandfather may tell you about the rite of Confirmation, that sacred moment that still resonates in my soul like a heavenly melody. It begins with the renewal of Baptismal promises, renouncing evil and professing the faith. Then, the bishop lays hands on us and anoints us with chrism, that fragrant oil that seals the Spirit within us. It is the climax where we seek Jesus and find him alive in his grace.
Imagine the church illuminated, the aroma of incense, the expectant silence. When the bishop says, “Receive the Holy Spirit,” it is as if a gentle breeze fills your heart. I felt it like a kind fire that impelled me to love Jesus with greater passion. This rite marks us as disciples, incorporating us fully into the Church.
In my experience, it was a transformative moment: from a child to a young person committed to the faith. Celebrate it at Mass to unite with the Eucharistic banquet, where Jesus gives himself completely. It is positive and profound: it gives us Christian identity and equips us for witness.
Chrism symbolizes strength; it makes us soldiers of Christ, not for wars, but for love. It’s touching how God touches us in this way, inviting us to love Him in everything.
Experience it with reverence, pray before and after. It is a divine embrace that lasts forever.
And finally, some advice from this old friend: Prepare yourselves by sincerely renewing your promises. Live the rite attentively, feeling every word. Afterward, celebrate with your family, giving thanks. Seek Jesus in frequent Eucharist to rekindle the fire. Serve as joyful witnesses, and love Him daily. These steps will help you love Him with a burning heart.
