The Pope advocates a two-state solution and regrets the breakdown of dialogue in the Middle East
Pope Leo XIV, upon his return to the Vatican from Castel Gandolfo, addressed the press on the situation in the Middle East. The Pontiff reiterated the Holy See’s firm commitment to the two-state solution, a position it has supported for years. In this regard, he emphasized the need to seek a path that respects all the peoples involved.
When asked about the recognition of Palestine as a state, the Pope stated that such recognition could be beneficial. However, he emphasized that currently there is no genuine willingness to listen on the part of the other side, which has led to a breakdown in dialogue.
Regarding the situation in Gaza, the Pope mentioned that, although the local Catholic parish is doing well, military incursions are becoming increasingly close. Despite this, he remains in contact with the community to offer support and solidarity.

Furthermore, the Pontiff expressed his concern about the recent Russian incursions, noting that someone is seeking to escalate the conflict. He reiterated his call to lay down arms, halt military advances, and return to the negotiating table. In this context, he emphasized that if Europe were truly united, it could play a significant role in promoting peace.
Finally, when asked about the need for rearmament, the Pope declined to comment, noting that these are political issues also influenced by external pressure on Europe. However, he reaffirmed the Holy See’s commitment to maintaining constant dialogue with ambassadors and state leaders, always seeking a peaceful and just solution for all the peoples of the region.
