The Playing Field as a School of Peace: The Pope’s Call for This June

Pope Leo XIV invites us to rediscover the essential values of sport as a driving force for fraternity, respect, and solidarity in a fragmented world

The Playing Field as a School of Peace: The Pope’s Call for This June

Beyond the scores, trophies, and high-level competition, sport holds a transformative potential capable of breaking down borders. This June, Pope Leo XIV focuses his prayer intention on an area that unites millions of people across the globe, reminding us that the playing field can become a true school of fraternity, respect, and solidarity.

The Holy Father invites us to view sport not as an end in itself, but as a powerful space for encounter. At a historical moment that cries out for unity, this initiative seeks to ensure that different sporting disciplines act as bridges between diverse people and cultures, fostering mutual understanding where divisions often exist.

An invitation to change our way of life

The Pope’s proposal is not limited to those who wear a professional jersey; it is a universal call that speaks to the daily lives of each one of us. This month’s intention challenges us to adopt and integrate essential virtues of fair play into our own lives:

  • Team spirit:  Understanding that no one is saved alone and that we advance further if we do it together.
  • Joy and humility:  Accepting both victory and defeat with nobility and a smile.
  • Openness towards others:  Recognizing in the rival a brother, not an enemy.

Join the global prayer

To make it easier for the entire Church community and people of goodwill to join this cause, the initiative includes visual and audio resources that deliver the message in a direct and accessible way. Through platforms like  The Pope Video  and  The Pope Audio , it is possible to connect with the great challenges facing humanity and the mission of the Church today.

The invitation remains open: take a moment in your daily life and pray with the Pope. To deepen this prayer experience and access all official resources, you can visit the official website of the  Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network.

JUNE: For the values of sport

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord of life,

We thank you for the gift of sport,

by those who glorify God through the exercise of their bodies,

for the friendships that are born on the court

and the joy of playing as a team.

You teach us that in life, as in the game,

No one is saved alone.

We need each other to grow,

to learn to respect, to overcome limits,

and celebrate together the achievements made.

We ask that sport always be

school of fraternity and not of empty rivalry,

a space for meeting, not for exclusion,

a path of peace and not of violence.

Make those who practice, train, or cheer

discover a universal language in sport

that brings cultures closer, unites peoples,

and sows respect, solidarity and personal growth.

Lord Jesus,

May every sport be a parable of a life lived with you,

collaborating with effort and joy,

living humbly in defeat

and gratitude in the victory you offer us in your resurrection.

May your Spirit never be absent from us,

that makes us one team, united with you

to build communion and fraternity in history.

Amen.
